  1. But would we even know of the source material... were it not for the composer?

is it so beautiful because of the composer....or the source material?

You raise such a good question, Martijn. I have contemplated a similar one in a different context as well.

Is a piece of music enjoyable in every rendition of it, or are there better and bad versions.

I got back to this idea, when I decided I wanted to buy the reworked Four Seasons by Richter, but as my father had the original Vivaldi piece, but I don't, I thought I'd buy a version of the original at the same time.
But which version to buy. It has been recorded so many times, and the interpretations are always slightly different.

And som sould searching leaves me at a poit where I have to confess I am quite 'lazy' and I like 'the song' better than the interpretation (except when it comes to my favorite pieces of classical music, then I do have my favorite renditions, and I can be quite picky about them...).
But overall, if the melody, if the content for lack of a better word, appeals to me, I don't really mind the execution (I know, lazy, lazy me).

But I absolutely don't have this attitude when it comes to books. A book to me is only good if its content is delivered in a good writing style.
For me the best (worst) example of this is the first Twilight book.

A couple of years ago, I wanted to know what all the pooha was about so I set out to read the damn book. My sister, a published writer of teenage literature herself, warned my that it was badly written. I thought she was exagerating.
    She wasn't.
I wouldn't call the story original or even good, but well, let's just say it's a story, and if written in a proper style, let's say it would be an easy-to-read, fluffy teen book.
But now, the book is so badly written, I found it really hard to finish. I so wanted to contact Stephanie Meyer and give her contact details of a local writing course...
So there for me style ruined content (well not that there was that much content to ruin, but you catch my drift).

So do you guys also need a mix of content and style? And do you also have that for music as much as for books (or maybe for you it's the other way around)?

I'm looking forward to hearing your sides of this.

For Tallis, you raise an interesting point.
For Purcell, you raise a questionable point.
For Vivaldi, you raise a ludicrous point.

  3. I actually agree with all the charges. In 300 years though... who knows. (Unlikely, I grant you that, but... well, it is a thought experiment.)

He's been very busy lately, here are updates on all of his new scores:

    Max-scored films at Cannes

Three films scored by Max have been selected for this year’s Cannes Festival.

The Congress, Max and Ari Folman’s (Waltz with Bashir) latest collaboration, opens the Director’s Fortnight. The film combines live action and animated material, and stars Robin Wright and Harvey Keitel. It’s based on the cult sci-fi novel The Futurological Congress by Stanislaw Lem (Solaris).

Last Days on Mars, the debut feature film from Oscar-nominated Irish director Ruairí Robinson, also screens in the Director’s Fortnight. The sci-fi thriller, in which a group of astronaut explorers succumb, one by one, to a mysterious force while collecting specimens on Mars, stars Live Schreiber and Romola Garai.

Finally, Ritesh Batra’s debut directorial feature The Lunchbox, starring Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi) tells an intimate and fascinating story centred on a mistaken delivery in Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system. The film premieres at the Critics’ Week.

  4. Scratch two off. According to the site of a guy who works on his scores a lot, "The Congress" started recording in 2011, and "The Nun" was listed to be recorded in late September, 2012.

So, it just looks like one new project, "White Night".

    Max Richter, from facebook.com

We are delighted to formally announce Max's new partnership with the prestigious and world's oldest classical music label, Deutsche Grammophon in Berlin. This collaboration includes Deutsche Grammophon's re-release of Max's renowned solo albums, Infra, 24 Postcards in Full Color, Songs from Before and The Blue Notebooks as well as a new recording of Memoryhouse this September. Further, Max's recomposition of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons will be re-released with an exclusive performance film and interactive app this Spring along with new releases in the pipeline for next year. It is an incredibly special time for Max, please stay close for more announcements regarding this exciting collaboration.

Richter left Fatcat records and signed with Deutsche Grammophon. This, imo, signifies big things to come and change in style which can only make me happy. Vivaldi Re-composed was marvelous.

Excellent news. He's one of the most interesting composers today -- in a similar category as Goldenthal, in a way.
    I am extremely serious.

    Lots of new projects:

Max has scored Andrea Di Stefano's film starring Benicio Del Toro as Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and Josh Hutcherson as a young American surfer thrust into Escobar's inner circle. "An impressive debut" -The Hollywood Reporter.

Max has provided the score for the Heyday and BBC Films production of Testament of Youth, a searing story of love and war premiering on October 14th at the Centrepiece Gala supported by the Mayor of London at the 58th BFI London Film Festival. The film is based on Vera Brittain’s memoir and is directed by James Kent and starring Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Hayley Atwell, Emily Watson and Dominic West.

  7. Thanks for the review! I am definitely going to see that film. I agree, "To the Stars" is a killer track, despite this kind of sound has become synonymous for a certain kind of "space feeling". Maybe Deutsche Grammophon will release Richter's material on CD eventually? Let's see.

  8. As in Richter's only? As both composers are represented.

  9. Well, it would be a 3 CD set all in all, which is unlikely to be released, but a two CD set with material from both would be gorgeous.

As Pawel says, both composers are represented on the album, and it's more than 2 hours. From what I've read, it's being released on a 2CD set too soon.

  10. Yeah, November 22nd. In Poland our website took media patronage of the release smile I'll be reviewing it (writing it fairly soon, though published in a month).

As Thor said. It's the same material as what Thor reviewed: one CD of Richter, one of Balfe and previously written and tracked in tracks (Frahm and Richter's own Tuesday from Works of Woolf).
