Now officially the most sturdy volcano on this planet. Having kept the air above us forbidden for plans for over almost 100 hours now, and with no real slow down, it's one spectacular event.

    Official name: Eyjafjallajökull (pronounciation)
    Nickname: Kully
    Mother: Katla

Animated map of the cloud in the coming days (say "hello" to Kully America):

Stupid volcano. I have to fly to England on the 4th may. If the plane is cancelled, I'll swim to Iceland to pour water in it.

I've also just read on the news that the european summer is expected to be 2 degrees C lower due to the ash cloud.

I should've flown to England tomorrow morning for the London Book Fair (work, but I was looking forward to my Tuesday afternoon of spare time in London). Just because of this stupid volcano, it had to be cancelled and it will be just another day at the office tomorrow. sad

Other than that, it is a spectacular sight, and it's always amusing to see mankind to be overshadowed and humbled by nature. It puts us firmly in our place.

The Icelanders, I guess... And I don't get it, it's not that hard to pronounce; "ey(ja)" is island, "fjall(a)" is (loosely) mountainous area/highland, and "jökull" is glacier. Rolls right off my tongue... tongue

And here is me looking gormless on Eyjafjallajökull, back in summer of 2005: http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/6638/i402.jpg

I totally agree. We need more of these things. (I am a volcanologist, so I guess I'm a bit biased...) But why this had to happen now, when I'm about to fly back to Germany for a two-week vacation, escapes me...

People who live near Heathrow are loving it. Even here, I've noticed the lack of air traffic.

Me too. My flat is located right beneath the final approach to Aberdeen Airport (we also have an extremely busy heliport serving the North Sea petroleum rigs) so when I finally get there tomorrow (by train) I can look forward to at least a few days of uninterrupted sleep in the morning.

Earplugs work a treat. I'm a 'bit' of an insomniac, and I'm usually awake to hear birds tweeting away outside my window, which is one of THE worst sounds to hear when you're trying to get to sleep... so I just use some earplugs and hey presto, no more bird tweets.

Hehe same here, I ignored this topic, thinking it was another one of those totally goofy ones.

I must say these are stunning images. Once again it's nature that shows the biggest and best spectacle. Not even the most ingenious CGI action shots could produce something as awe-inspiring !!!! punk punk

Of course it helps if the photographer knows a thing or two about his craft.

  3. Someone's probably already made this observation, but anyway...

I suggest the UK send a deputation quick smart bearing a placard that can be seen from afar: "Iceland! All is forgiven! Please call off the volcano!"

Apparently Guðnasteinn is the name of the volcano, and Eyjafjallajökull of the glacier on top of it. So, in fact, Eyjafjallajökull is melting away!

EDIT: I'm wrong! The volcano has the same name as the glacier.
