I feel sad. I am glad he got his deserved recognition in Ghent, those trumpets and visuals were insane and a great experience. He will be missed.

That's too bad. And so shortly after Ghent! He must have been rather sick back in October too?

    Goodnight Dr Hans Reinhardt sad

What a great actor. Judgement At Nuremberg, Cross of Iron, A Bridge Too Far, Deep Impact and many others.

I'm sad to say I haven't seen any of his German films, I'd like to rectify that.

Yeah, a massive surprise. I had no idea he had drug issues. What a tragedy -- one of the best character actors in the last 15 years.

    What a terrible loss. sad
  7. This story is receiving headline news here in the UK. Which I find a bit surprising until I realised that a young(ish), successful Hollywood actor with a previous drug habit possibly dying from a drugs overdose is too tabloidy to ignore.

Most memorably I remember him as the Defense Council Hans Rolfe in Judgement At Nuremberg.
Slightly overacted, but what a tour de force.

His shining moment though, I think, was his 1984 documentary Marlene, in which he interviewed aging Golden Age superstar Marlene Dietrich, who -likely in the throes of an old age affliction- was even more of an unfathomable and erratic firebrand than she generally was, jumping up and down through topics, refusing to be actually photographed/filmed and switching from German to English and back at the drop of a hat.

He made, what might in other hands have become a lurid Sunset Boulevard/What Happened To Baby Jane-like portrayal of a rambling old woman, into a deeply moving, interesting and powerfully revealing and loving portrait of one of Hollywood's AND Germany's greatest screen stars in history.

  12. Perhaps not someone I thought was long gone, but the fact that Christopher Lee is still alive and more-or-less kicking at the ripe old age of 91 strikes me as nothing short of a miracle. The man really is a vampire! cool
