    Yeah, I've read it.

I think Tony was severely underrated and that his movies (maybe except the Pelham remake) had much more brains than he was given credit.

Not for their music though, mostly.

I wonder if he did have brain cancer? Apparently his family claims he didn't.

I hope he did (in any other context, this would sound horrible) so that at least then his actions seem more justifiable. Suicide due to depression is one of the most tragic ways to die.
  2. I wrote a post about Tony Scott on my just-revived blog. I really wish I finished that Man on Fire review...

  3. An interesting read Pawel. I'm going to check out / re-watch some of his films, because as you said he was not appreciated as much as his older brother, yet he has done some films that are entertaining throughout and with enough intensity and suspense to fill two films.

And all this time I was unaware that True Romance is written by Tarantino ! shame

  4. Yeah, Tony changed the ending and made the story in chronological fashion rather than the typical Tarantino way with mixed timelines.

Tarantino didn't get pissed off and actually loved Tony's movie to the point that he agreed to do a commentary track for the DVD release. Which he never did. There were two films with Tarantino scripts made into movies at the time, Quentin actually intended them as part of the same story - True Romance and Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers. He hated the Stone movie.

Did you know that some scenes were ghostwritten by Tarantino in Crimson Tide? Like the fight over Mobius and Kirby's Silver Surfer fans. That was him. I think also the scene when they have a movie trivia game before boarding the sub, that screams Tarantino to me.

  5. I have just learned CT was ghost-written by Quentin (looking through Tony Scott's bio). Makes total sense now because that Silver surfer dialogue is just vintage him.

  6. Outside of Tony, IMDB reports that Tarantino ghostwrote on...

  7. I don't know that Tony Scott was that underrated. He was allowed to keep making big movies at regular intervals with handsome budgets and drawcard actors. I'm sure there's a lot of people circling Hollywood who wish they were that underrated.

  8. I am talking about the critics, not the wide appeal.

Of all things that got rave reviews, it was Unstoppable, which seems a tad ironic.

  9. I'm not talking about the wide appeal. The business -- which is the suits, and the critics, and the stars -- kept him in high demand and continually awarded him with new opportunities. The audience largely takes what is fed to them. If this is being underrated, then I'll have some of that please. beer

I don't think he was underrated either. Also i don't think he was a great director. But a good one, and to see him passing like that is tragic and sad but that's a different subject than his work. i read somewhere in one big article if it hadn't been for Scott, Michael Bay would not have existed. I didn't realize if the author was pro or against Scott's work in general.

Me? Americans are funny. Hordes of them believe moon landing was shot in a studio and that government threw hologram planes onto the twin towers on 9/11 and brought them down via explosive demolitions.

Indeed! I'm really saddened to hear this, Armstrong was one of my childhood heroes.

No, a small percentage believe some mixture like that. Of course, if you'd like me to start posting some videos from Greece and the stupidity there, I'd be happy to!

Well go ahead wink Nothing matches the 'merica-filled crap in the world wide web, although we do have our share of stupid people. But thankfully - yet, no truthers, mormons, hillbilly rednecks, fanatic christians and fanatic anti-gay loonies and other nice stuff like that. Oh and on a sidenote, i am from Cyprus, remember wink

Hey, Mormons are nice folks. Be nice to us smile

Neil Armstrong was a piece of history. There are still very few who have been to where he went first.

Edit: By the way, according to the church's official website there are 740 Mormons in Greece. smile

Well, Europeans are pretty stupid as well. I'm not convinced we are any better off. There's probably more of a focus on individualism in the US, so people with minority beliefs tend to be louder, while in Europe people are more afraid to embarrass themselves in public, so they tend to keep their stupidity to themselves.

I've even read that about 50% of Europeans have an IQ below average.

It's a shame. Maybe if he had composed for film rather than being one of the most inspirational people his memory might be given a bit more respect.

Along with Jacques Cousteau, Thor Heyerdahl and Tenzing & Hillary, Neil Armstrong was one of my childhood heroes. Aldrin & Collins were merely bit players but that's being a young child for you. shame wink
