Thread for this interesting Canadian label, that released last year's Le Voyage en Ballon.

    New release:
25 YEARS OF FRENCH CINEMA MUSIC

A digital premiere for the complete LP album 25 ans de Musique de cinéma, released in 1956. This 40 minutes anthology produced by Lucien Adès gathers suites from some of the best French scores from the beginning of the thirties to the mid-fifties - the dawn of the New Wave. Serge Baudo conducts with brio and the quality of the high fidelity recording, painstakingly restored, shows to advantage these emblematic works. A short vocal introduction by Adès himself precedes each track of this survey of an era and a scenery that generate much nostalgia.

We complete the program with additional excerpts from Maurice Leroux original soundtrack to Albert Lamorisse's Le Ballon rouge (The Red Balloon), a few dances by Maurice Jaubert from René Clair's 14 Juillet and four movie songs by Joseph Kosma and Jaubert. The 16-page fully bilingual booklet includes liner notes from the original album and a new presentation by DCM producer Clément Fontaine.

    Very good, Bregt.
I'm a great proponent of this label, mainly due to their focus on Delerue.

Well, if they released the balloon score then we should really take notice of the label.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. I'm interested in that set. It's a lot of music to sift through, but there's bound to be some gems there.

    GUY DE MAUPASSANT

Original soundtrack composed and conducted by Georges Delerue

Georges Delerue is making a comeback at Disques Cinémusique with the digital premiere of his music for the movie Guy de Maupassant, directed by Michel Drach in 1982. This release will be a surprise for many fans since no excerpt of the soundtrack Gaumont LP has ever been reissued in its original form on any of the numerous compilations devoted to Delerue. Starring Claude Brasseur, Jean Carmet and Miou-Miou, Guy de Maupassant is based on the life of the famous French writer. The composer recreates the mood of 19th century Paris through a series of musical numbers that carry us from carefree social gatherings to the anguish of a declining career, undermined by disease.

To complete this 34 minutes recording, we include a reprise of some flute and guitar arrangements of themes composed by Georges Delerue for other French movies, as well as an extended orchestral version of Fanny's Theme from Guy de Maupassant. These five tracks where originally featured on two previous DCM releases. 12-page booklet.

    MUSIC FOR SCREEN (2 CD)
38 excerpts from 20 movie and TV series scores composed and conducted by Raymond Alessandrini

We are happy to offer a first compilation devoted to Raymond Alessandrini (born 1948), an early collaborator of Georges Delerue who in his turn wrote for the screen for 20 years. He notably composed the music for many movies by Jean-Charles Tacchella, including Travelling avant, L'Homme de ma vie and Les Gens qui s'aiment, one of his last assignments in 1999.

In addition to being a first class arranger, Alessandrini shares with Delerue a strong sense of melody that lends itself to numerous variations. A classically trained musician, he also worked as pianist for composers as different as Michel Magne, Lalo Schifrin and Elmer Bernstein. His vast experience allowed him to tackle a wide variety of genres, from the satirical comedy Deux heures moins le quart avant Jésus-Christ by Jean Yanne to the epic dramas with TV series like Les Colonnes du ciel, Fabien de la Drôme and Félicien Grevèche, to classics of the silent area such as L'Hirondelle et la Mésange.

The majority of the recordings by Raymond Alessandrini assembled here appear for the first time on disc and their sound quality reaches the highest standard. The 24-page booklet includes an interview with the composer, completing the informative liner notes by producer Clément Fontaine.

    L'Enfer d’Henri-Georges Clouzot (Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno)
Original soundtrack composed and conducted by Bruno Alexiu

    DCM 130 • UPC: 7 71028 23583 4

    Release : June 15, 2011 - NOW IN STOCK
In 1964, director Henri-Georges Clouzot undertook the making of Inferno, an ambitious psychological thriller which promised to be a landmark in the history of French cinema. Serge Reggiani starred as a husband obsessed with the alleged infidelities of his younger wife, embodied by the seductive Romy Schneider. The German born actress was then prepared to give her very best to overcome the too wholesome image associated with her Sissi character.

Paradoxically, the more than comfortable budget that Clouzot benefited from for Inferno, thanks to the participation of the Americans, finally proved to be detrimental for the project and indirectly caused ts abandonment after a series of episodes that were widely reported by the press at the time.

45 years later, cinema historian Serge Bromberg managed to persuade Clouzot’s estate to grant access to the 185 cans of Inferno’s rushes in order to reconstitute the genesis of this legendary misadventure. His movie, produced with the collaboration of Ruxandra Medrea, carried off the César for Best Documentary in 2010 and other international awards. It features scenes on location played mainly by Reggiani, Schneider and Dany Carrel, as well as kinetic art tests that deal with movements of forms and colors. In the contemporary part of the documentary, actors Bérénice Béjo and Jacques Gamblin perform additional scenes taken from the original Clouzot script, and there are numerous testimonies by some technicians who worked on Inferno.

On this fascinating narrative framework, Bruno Alexiu composed a rich, vibrant and sensitive score that also appears to be a tribute to famous predecessors like François de Roubaix, Georges Delerue and Michel Magne, with an occasional nod to Bernard Herrmann. Sensuous jazz and electric guitar rhythms embellished with brass alternate with more abstract sonic experimentations, the whole effectively reflecting the typical effervescence of the sixties.

Liner notes are by Jim Lochner, managing editor of Film Score Monthly Online. 20-page booklet with numerous archival stills.

    New release:
MAURICE JARRE'S UNPUBLISHED FRENCH FILM MUSIC performed by Robert Lafond
    DCM 131 • UPC : 771028235940
    Street date : September 1, 2011

Our program reconstructs the core of four of the first scores that Maurice Jarre (1924-2009) wrote for features films in his native France. The movies are directed by Georges Franju (Spotlight on the Murderer, Judex), Serge Bourguignon (Sundays & Cybele) and Frédéric Rossif (The Animals).

When listening to this music, one realizes that Jarre already knew the tricks of the trade and that he mastered a wide variety of genres, an essential asset for his future international career. What is perhaps the most striking appears to be the melodic richness of numerous themes. Just like Georges Delerue, who was one year younger than him, Maurice Jarre could create memorable tunes with an enviable facility.

Already recognized for his reconstruction of Delerue’s works, Robert Lafond again puts his great talent in the service of this other giant of film music. Produced with the most advanced sampling technology available, his versions faithfully reproduce Maurice Jarre’s melodies and original orchestrations, whether they consist of a few soloists or large symphonic ensembles, purely acoustic sounds or electronic ventures typical of the period.

Packed with illustrations, the bilingual 20-page booklet features track by track liner notes by producer Clément Fontaine and an introduction by Jacques Hiver, the great European Maurice Jarre specialist in Europe and himself producer of an important part of Jarre's early works in France.

N.B. As of our previous title H.G. Clouzot’s Inferno there will be no exporting of this CD through our regular generalist European distributor. From now on our new releases will be available only through specialized film music outlets and the Disques Cinemusique website. We offer a fast delivery service in which shipping cost is included in the listed price.

    New release
IMITATION OF LIFE & INTERLUDE by Frank Skinner

    Release date : March 1, 2012

This is the overdue CD premiere of two original soundtrack albums by Frank Skinner (1897-1968), the overlooked composer of about 200 movie scores who worked extensively with director Douglas Sirk. Other Sirk-Skinner successful melodramas include Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows and Written on the Wind.

IMITATION OF LIFE (1959) is arguably one of Skinner’s finest efforts, a forgotten gem packed with moving and atmospheric themes, in addition to the main title melody provided by Sammy Fain. INTERLUDE (1957) relies mostly on popular classical-symphonic works. In both cases, Joseph Gershenson conducts with brio the Universal-International orchestra and the young Henry Mancini is said to have collaborated anonymously.

Mechanical licenses are issued in Canada for all our releases, so that publishers and composers always receive their due even when the recordings have fallen into public domain, which is the case here. The two soundtracks have been digitalized and restored from mint LP albums. The overall sound quality is very good : clean but warm and crisp. IMITATION OF LIFE is in true stereo and a slight reverberation has been added to the monophonic INTERLUDE to create some depth.

MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES / WRITTEN ON THE WIND • Music by Frank Skinner
    DCM 137 • UPC : 771028 236718
    Street date : June 1st, 2012

Another long awaited CD premiere for two vintage soundtracks originally released by Decca, in 1957 and in 1956.

As with Imitation of Life, previously reissued on the DCM label, Man of a Thousand Faces may be considered a major opus in the long career of the discrete composer named Frank Chester Skinner. Here again, quantity and quality go together, the 122-minute movie offering an hour of music for large orchestra, conducted con brio by Joseph Gershenson. A gorgeous 41-minute selection was retained for the LP album.

One recognizes in Man of a Thousand Faces Skinner’s propensity to draw inspiration from the classical repertoire, both for the arrangements and the melodies. This approach perfectly suits Joseph Pevney’s black and white movie, which assumes a documentary look in recreating the life and career of actor Lon Chaney, from the silent era to the dawn of talking pictures.

On the other hand, the Written on the Wind soundtrack release filled only one side (22 minutes) of an LP, the music for this Douglas Sirk melodrama being more concise. Victor Young wrote the main title song performed by The Four Aces, whose melody is integrated into Skinner’s score without becoming too intrusive.

Both high quality analog recordings were restored using the most advanced digital technology to deliver the best of the two worlds. 12-page full color booklet.
