The orchestra were great, they were just too small.

I guess the VIP party will have been in one of the private rooms but can't tell for sure.

In this more security concious era of anti-terrorism I've no idea how easy it would be to get into a private VIP party at the RAH? I did it at John Barry's 1998 concert, marched straight in un-checked, helped myself to a glass of complimentary champagne and mingled in ( which is how I got to chat with Basil Poledouris ), if I'd been there yesterday I would have given it a try, the worst that could happen is that your way could have been barred and you'd be asked to leave.

No, the worst that could have happened is being jumped by security for breach of the peace, being detained at her majesty's pleasure for illegal entry, being arraigned for activities that might fall under the terrorism act, being extradited to the US without appeal or process on the grounds that you are suspected of bing a terrorist (which makes extradition automatic), and spending the rest of your days in Guantanamo Bay.

    It could happen.

    Well.

It was a fun night, but without trying to sound too downtrodden, I pretty much agree with Anthony. It felt like too much was packed into the event, where just an introduction to each piece from the composers would have sufficed. Some of the choices were a little odd though, and they did drag a little. Were it up to me I would have chosen far more crowd pleasing pieces!

This is how my playlist for the evening would have looked:

David Arnold - The selection was great, I don't think I would have changed much. I would have chosen Stargate instead of Casino Royale and of course kept Independence Day (BUT WITH CHOIR!!!! slant )

Rachel Portman - Not that familiar with the composer, but I enjoyed the selection that was played - Cider House Rules (Main Titles), Chocolat (Passage of Time) and Emma(End Titles). Very lovely, one of the highlights for me.

Michael Nyman - Nyman himself played "The Piano" on the piano, but did make a few mistakes. Would have been better played by a concert performer and had some strings to back it up.

Craig Armstrong - I wouldn't have invited him.

Dario Marianelli - Seemed like a great guy when he spoke. They played a couple of tracks from Atonement. Personally, I would have chosen something from V For Vendetta and Brothers Grimm. Far more entertaining.

Anne Dudley - Again, not that familiar with this composer. Bright Young Things was a little boring, but the piece from American History X made up for it. (Or was it the other way round? I have no idea.)

Patrick Doyle - They played Much Ado About Nothing. It was alright, though I would have chosen Frankenstein. But I'm not really a Doyle fan.

    Chris Gunning - Who?

John Ottman - It was okay. I would have picked the theme from X-Men 2 and the piece from Valkyrie - but a lack of choir might have hindered it a little. These would have impressed the audience far more I think.

Goerge Fenton - They played a suite from Shadowlands and 'The Final Mission' from Memphis Bell. The former was boring, but the latter more than made up for it. Another highlight of the evening. I would have kept Memphis Bell and also played something from Valiant and The Blue Planet. (Perhaps the theme from Fool's Gold too, that's a proper crowd pleaser.)

Harry Gregson-Williams - They played a suite from Narnia, which was very lovely I have to admit. I think I would have kept that, but maybe have played Prince of Persia too (which has become a favourite of mine from this year).

Jonny Greenwood - I really enjoyed the music from There Will Be Blood and I would have kept what they played. I'm not sure those who hadn't seen the film enjoyed this one, but to those who had I'm sure it was enjoyable.

John Powell - An obvious highlight for me, and I love that he conducted it. I'm definitely happy they played How To Train Your Dragon, I love that score! The orchestrations, or the performances (or whatever) did seem a little lacking in places (I think it was the brass section that struggled a little). Perhaps there wasn't much time to rehearse, or perhaps the orchestrations were changed for the concert? Either way, it's only a very minor gripe with what was a great end to the first half of the evening.

Shame about the turn out though. I assumed it would be packed?

Well, yes. I was being a tad facetious to express my complete indifference. The only thing I know about Gunning is he's a film composer and has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall.

He's a very fine orchestral composer, I'd check out his Cold Lazarus which is very Goldsmith in Total Recall mode-like.

  1. Don't forget his score to the BBC documentary Wild Africa. It has one of my favourite wildlife documentary themes.

Yup, that's a great one. His FIRELIGHT is a gorgeous, romantic score too.
    I am extremely serious.

I really love Wild Africa but, like almost everything I've heard by him, it skirts around the temp-track very obviously.

A strong John Barry influence in this, that's partly why I love it so much but it is more than that too.

Cold Lazarus definitely channels the temp of The Mutant from Total Recall.

The VIP party was downstairs in the Arena Bar. Security was incredibly tight - if you weren't listed you weren't getting in!

I would have still tried, made up some old flannel about why I'm invited etc.

Nope, and apparantly all those who were sitting around me are all active members on FSM.

Well, I suppose that's not such a bad loss.

There was an 'FSM' meet on Sunday evening, with people from a number of boards present.

With regard to Timmer's RAH security question, it varies considerably from event to event. Morricone had more security than I've ever seen there, but the LOTR Live to Projection concerts had none.

I'd also love an expanded Cold Lazarus - there's lots of great stuff missing from the album!
