Every chance of a physical CD! A few final things have to be sorted out before they can be manufactured, but I've already got a Red Book master prepared, so it'll come eventually!

    shocked
    bhangra fireworks bhangra

I think I waited for Clockwise for two years or so, so I can probably stand to wait a bit for a CD for The Windé. wink
Thanks for putting your comments up, Richard! beer Always great to hear from 'behind the scenes'.

BUT, it's a shame though that some of the tracks are, IMO, spoilt by the inclusion of SFX. And in some of the most beautiful passages too.

Yes, it is. I wish that the music had been left alone rather than adding what sounds like wind, rain and thunder to the two "The Moorland" tracks.

As for the sfx in music, in my personal opinion, when it's outside the narrative (out of visual context too) and if we are talking purely musical forms of release (digital or physical (CD)), including sfx or spoken words into music is always a horrible idea. No matter the intention. smile

While I agree in principle, I thought the SFX mentioned would entail dialogue (which I really, really, really hate! If I wanted to relive scenes I'd buy the film!) and scene ambience effects like doors slamming, cityscapes or the like.

I'd prefer completely SFX-less music, but rain and thunder isn't so bad, and might even enhance the mood of the tracks (like those new age mood albums that were all the rage in the late nineties).
So far, and in light of Richard's explanation above, I'm not too worried.

  11. Thanks Richard for your insights into the genesis of the "The Moorlands" piece and the inclusion of the SFX in the music.

I suppose that the first thing to bear in mind with The Windé is that this is a piece that is inspired by the short score Maciek wrote for the film and so the music on the release is not constrained by the narrative. Therefore, anything can be incorporated into the piece.

It's clear that the need was to have the sounds of rain, wind & thunder in the music rather than to re-create those elements by musical means (whether it be with guitar or additional instruments).

I was definitely approaching listening to the music from a score point-of-view rather than anything else. And therefore, the appearance of the SFX was a surprise - and a disappointment. (Hence, everything following is based on my own point of view and preconceptions.) Rather than appreciating the intention of the composer, the inclusion of the effects makes the tracks containing them sound like a DVD rip of the film's soundtrack. Perhaps not the primary intention of Maciek or yourself.

The inclusion of effects such as this rarely sound as well recorded as the instruments they accompany. And, therefore, they sound a bit "bolted on" to the piece as a whole. Either trying to mimic the effects required musically or even using a specially-recorded wind machine in the studio would have helped bind it all together.

The use of effects can work in the context of a score - Roque Banos' use of a siren in his recent Evil Dead is a great recent example.

The last time I thought rain and thunder worked in a musical piece was in Jean-Michel Jarre's "Équinoxe". (Though I am not sure whether these sounds in Jarre's album are recorded rain and thunder or are actually synth creations. Thor?)

Siren in Evil Dead is incorporated musically to the point that one cannot easily differentiate it if not paying close attention. Because it is used as a musical instrument, and has been used as such in the past. It has musical qualities such as tone, timbre etc. The dialogue and nature sounds (rain, wind), don't.

As far as I know, it's a combination of synths and sampled sounds.

In general, I dislike SFX on soundtrack albums. I want to create my own associations when I listen to them. However, if it's done discretely -- like in the beginning of a track or something -- it can work. Like BLADE RUNNER. And also if it adds to the concept album feel, like the use of thunder and storm in Alan Parsons Project's TALES OF MYSTERY.

Of course, I haven't heard Maciek's piece yet, so I don't know how it works in this particular context.
    I am extremely serious.
