Another thread from scoreviews brought back to life here at maintitles.

This is the thead where we compare two and sometimes three pieces of music from difference scores to hear their similarities in orchestration or melody OR both. Some are subtle and some are shameless.

I don't know how to put soundclips online, but I've always found a remarkable simmilarity between:

    "End Titles" from Jaws
    John Williams

    and

    "Heal the World"
    Michael Jackson

thanks Erik. Haven't listened to em all, but many of these (granted I have not done any CLOSE, DETAILED listening) sound SIMILAR at best.

Although, the Jurassic Park- Henry V one is pretty damn close. Yet nobody cares if the almighty JW does a little quote.

What do you MEAN no body. I put it up because it's shameless. And no one here said that WIlliams was innocent. You should hear the amount of classical rips there are in his music. And the Zimmer A Good As It Goes rip by Williams in The Terminal almost made me throw up. Williams ripping off Zimmer? The difference here is that some Williams fans seem to have come to grips with Williams borrowing music while fans of other composers are in denial and use the "Well, Williams does it!" argument as cover.

  2. I always thought that The Terminal sounds like the Fifth Ave. track from Thomas Newman's Meet Joe Black.

I don't understand. I didn't outright deny rips, I said certain things don't sound the same to me but that if one was looking for it, I could see it, and that a fair amount of comparisons are "stretching it" and word of mouth isn't going to cut it, I want examples, and it seems you're willing to provide. "smile

But at the end of the day, I said I don't CARE if it's "ripped" or not. If it sounds good, it sounds good. I'm not going to judge my ENJOYMENT of music on it's originality. Chances are, we could find something that sounded similar to any piece of music, if we had the time and will power. I'm not going to stop liking something just cause it sounds like something else, especially if I haven't heard or don't enjoy the something else. I don't see the logic in it.

Which is all fine and dandy. You are entitled to enjoy your music the way you want to. For me, and especially with the amount of music that I do have, I find these similarities a lot easier than most. I don't go out of my way to look for them... they just pop up and all of a sudden I'm thinking of a different score and not the one that I'm listening to. It happened a lot in Lair. Plus, it also comes down to creativity and true talent. Any dimwit can copy and paste a piece of music. But it take a truly creative and talented artist to creative something new and fresh. Now, while it's almost impossible to find music or film music that's truly 100% original I think that some composers make more of an effort to write something original than others. And if I want to hear Legends of the Fall, The Mask of Zorro, Lifeforce, Deep Blue Sea, I'll go and find the originals and not put on a second rate effort like most of Tyler's recent efforts are. IMHO of course.

Look, I know the dude has talent... it's either that he a one lazy fuck or has worked with some terrible producers or directors that fall in love with the temp and have Tyler write as close to the temp as possible. I really think Tyler needs to take a break from Hollywood blockbusters and go score a small independent film... likes the ones he worked on earlier in his career where his music sounded fresh.

I urge you to read the 3rd post by Mr. Kendall in http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts … ;archive=1

because IMO, he's right on the money.

BTW, Tyler HAS scored small indy films in the last couple years--finishing the game, bug--but i prefer the blockbusters. Can't wait for Rambo. :D

Dood... they are basically the same piece with some altered notes. It reminds me of really bad production music. You know, the piece that wants to sound like Mission Impossible but has to change one note here and there so they don't get sued by Mr. Schifrin.

But the ALTERED NOTES make a BIG difference. I was playing my Tyelr compilation in my car the other day and when (I think) the track THE JIHAD played, I was singing along thinking it should be Deep Blue Sea style but then it clearly went in another place.

To me, I play the two melodies on the piano and they are so obviously different even if they have some common tones, that i don't get why it's a problem for you.
