Here's a clip from my favourite Hercules film....

THE INCREDIBLE HULK vs A BEAR

He's got big oiled muscles, steady yourself D.

It has a strong influence of Michael Bay's style in this.

Just think, if you're ever angry, are you Hulk-throwing-a-grizzly-bear-into-space angry? Really makes you wonder.

Hmmm? Something to seriously ponder on for sure. I think I was darned close to Hulk-throwing-a-grizzly-bear-into-space-angry listening to Steve Jabberwocky's Robots In Disguise Fire Extinguisher score earlier but was saved by James Horner as Spiderman. Life sure has its ups at times!

But Jablonsky has never been about great film music. If you judge his scores based on that, you're misunderstanding or at the very least overlooking what they're mostly about. Gawd!

So, all this time I've been listening the wrong way? Crikey!

Yep, t'is you who is wrong, not the music. The lack of artistry is art in itself; begging the listener to imagine something far greater than what she hears. For what better gift of art than that of imagination? Jablonsky is a rare and misunderstood talent. He and Michael Bay truly deserve each other.

Jablo and Michael Bay should make a porn flick. With explosions.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

I suppose that is one good thing about it, but I think it's the result of committee - "What's the next franchise we can sell?" It won't surprise me if they make a film about the shake weight given its familiarity.

Well, we have the next best thing for Shake Weight:

They did. It also had robots in it.

I saw a screening of this today, I thought it was very dumb but also a lot of fun. Unpretentious and barely 100 mins long, which is rare for a modern blockbuster!

I liked the score and certainly wouldn't say it was a case similar to the homogenisation of Javier Navarrette on Wrath of the Titans. Having said that, it's definitely a modern action score (lots of pounding!), but there's also a lot of great stuff, including some surprisingly jazzy Schifrin-esque (well, a little) material towards the beginning, a suitably heroic theme for Hercules and some strong action music. In a way it reminded me of Andrew Lockington's Percy Jackson 2 score, in that it's a solid, often memorable score clearly showing the composer's personality, but one that also often conforms to the modern blockbuster sound.

I look forward to hearing the album, a fair bit of the action material is obscured in the mix so maybe all that pounding had more nuance than I could make out!

I already knew the film was going to be junk, but I'm disappointed his descritption is exactly what I was hoping the score would not be.

So, quoting the article, you didn't want a memorable score with a heroic theme for Hercules and strong action music?

I liked Navarette's Wrath of Titan. Also loved Kantelinen's Hercules, Shorter's Pompeii, etc. I'd not expect something else for such a movie, realistically speaking, wiht the status of major film scores for epics during the last 5-6 years. Anyway, Eager to hear it.

Even though his description of both film and score was reasonably positive? dizzy

Apparently I got a different version of the score that everyone else. I am completely clueless as to the location of these poorly integrated electronics everyone is talking about. I just hear a kickass action/adventure score.

    Dear Matt, what about:

Tracks like "Centaurs" or "dungeon and I am Hercules" ? curious as how you would describe them / what do you feel about them.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

IMHO, the score is too damn long, orchestrally, to be focusing only on a few electronics-infused oddities.

Wish they were few. They are bits and pieces everywhere in the album and irritate the hell out of me when they come crushing amateurishly ontop of the orchestra. He should stay away from damn electronics.

Sure. It's distracting. A bit distracting. But everything else is enjoyable that the distracting bits kinda make it "a bit" more interesting.

Yes . I think I expect too much from someone like Velazquez. If it was from another composer I might not be so disappointed.

I understand. I was looking forward to another classical-vein score like Gabriel Yared' Troy. Heck, expected the same thing with Wrath of the Titans as well. Disappointed both time, though Hercules got more enjoyable toward the latter half of the album.
  4. My two (and a half) cents on Hercules. Really wanted to like this... but just can't get into it.

Thank you Jon...I am relieved to know that someone else had the same experience with the score, and that I'm not just crazy smile I especially liked your praise of the main theme. I think it's glorious and the perfect anti-dote to the formulaic melodies of Tyler et al. It may be based on the 4 chords (right?) but it uses them far more engagingly than most action-adventure scores I've heard recently...perhaps even in the last half-decade or so. I just know it's been a long time since I had so much fun listening to a score for this kind of film.
