Since no one has a thread dedicated to this up-and-comer, I figured I should.

I really love his work on Shiver and what I've heard of his score for Devil sounds great. Wish there was a CD release for the latter...

And yet you haven't mentioned his best score to date, the absolutely beautiful 'EL ORFANATO' (THE ORPHANAGE) wink

One of the best horror films ever, it got hugely praised when it came out; so does the score, chilling with some very heartfelt and moving cue towards the finale, boding with the movie. Very recommended, go see it.

    Fernando Velazquez - Lope

Renaissance, calm and melodic colors for this new Fernando release.

I really enjoyed the film, I'll take this kind of horror over the slasher-porn type every single time.

    Good score too.

Oh, same here. Excellent work in all aspects! Glad you enjoyed this, this is horror film-making with class not the stupid crap Hollywood usually gets out (and let's not hear the "i like to watch heads chopped off, what's your problem" excuse for crap once again, please.).

Very true D, though I do enjoy a good decapitation ( good!? uhm ) scene, they don't come much better than in The Omen or, in more realistic circumstances such as Andy Garcia's shocking exit in Black Rain.

Who doesn't? Those movies are very different though, in comparison with the utter cheesy teenage crap we get these days. Last great film i've seen in this territory was the orphanage and from Hollywood, The Devil although very different.

    Yes.

Great film, great score. I especially loved the end titles cue...

That's indeed the most passionate, beautiful pieces of the score and a very emotional place in the film.

Absolutely mate!! Saw it last night and the main title piece is stunning - probably the boldest opening credits piece since Newton Howard's for Signs. Somebody please release this score!

I've listened to the clips of Lope -- fine but nothing that screams 'buy me!' Now, El Mal Ajeno (For the Good of Others) might be my second Velazquez album. Love those clips.

El Mal Ajeno is solemn, calm, sad and beautiful.

THE DEVIL is outstanding, at least in the film. The opening cues is one of the best single compositions this year.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  3. I don't understand why this composer is so acclaimed.
His music spents most of his screen time around the same topics leading to boredom. In movies like "For the good of others" and "Shiver" I feel he is deliberately pretending to be James Newton Howard. "Devil" is another example of how unorginial Velazquez can be...

Oh...i can't disagree more with that; how is DEVIL or EL ORFANATO unoriginal in any way?

  4. As long as he's not deliberately lifting ... so what?

Just found this one on youtube. Enjoy.

    The Orphanage Suite - Live

Look how passionate Velázquez is conducting and how moved is by the end of the suite. Amazing.

Oh yes, amazing works. Actually, what a 2010, he's done nothing wrong: 'El mal ajeno', 'Lope', 'Devil', and another horror work (that I have not heard yet), 'Julia's Eyes.

Can't wait to hear what he'll write for the next film by J.A. Bayona ('The Orphanage'), 'The Impossible'.

    Just saw DEVIL.

Pretty good, effective thriller; a chamber piece in a confined space.

I see that Shyamalan wrote it, but got someone else to direct it. Why can't he do stuff like this himself these days, instead of churning out those crappy things like LAST AIRBENDER and LADY IN THE WATER and THE HAPPENING and whathaveyou?

Anyways, very effective score too (mixed loudly), with some dark brass clusters that reminded me of Horner's ALIENS. This was my first exposure to Velazquez.
    I am extremely serious.

    Exactly my thoughts! beer

Mate, for Velasquez, do yourself a favor and rent and watch in a dark room with good sound system and high volume, EL ORFANATO (The orphanage). Then we talk smile

Well, he doesn't want to be typecast as 'that guy who did the thrillers', and felt he'd done all he could do in that genre. However, it's clear now where his strenghts lie and that he shouldn't try to re-invent himself. Let's hope he returns to creepy, less explicit things, indeed.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one, the trailer got a lot of laughs when Shyamalan's name was announced during the trailer, but it's rated pretty highly on IMDB, so I hope it will a good little thriller

as for the score, can't comment on it
