Similar to Ubeda, I'll just centralize the news concerning the film festival, the film music and the guests here.

I made a page with all music related events here:
    http://www.maintitles.net/features/even … hent-2010/

Is anyone (not Belgian) coming actually?
    Still tickets available.

Jup, me. And I'm most certainly not Belgian in any way!

By the way, looking forward to the film programme. Will be arriving at thursday for the Barry concert, WSA is at saturday, so I need something to do on the Friday. Heard that Sofia Coppola's SOMEWHERE is the closing film, but that means it's shown on the saturday, right? Really hoping to see something like BURIED at the festival...

I'm trying to negotiate with the online film magazine I'm writing for to cover some of the costs, plus press accreditation etc. to go to this if I can write about it for them. If it doesn't come through this time, I hope to do it next year. But the Goldenthal visit is a HUGE draw for me this year.

Any news on that Thor? Would be great!

As some of you may know, every year, the festival releases a cd with one of the guests from the previous year. This year, it's a cd with recordings of the music of Shigeru Umebayashi. Pity it isn't the performance of Desplat.

    Buy here:
    http://filmfestival.be/shop2.cgi?go=ite … mp;lang=en

A new CD in the ‘For The Record’ series has seen the light of day. Following in the footsteps of Mychael Danna, Craig Armstrong and Angelo Badalamenti this fourth compilation puts the Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi in the spotlight. The album contains music from In the Mood for Love, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower and other movies. The dedicated festival partner, the Brussels Philharmonic – the Orchestra of Flanders, assured the brilliant performance of the music under the direction of Dirk Brossé.

Shigeru Umebayashi was the guest of honor last year at the 36th edition of the Ghent Film Festival. The composer performed two sold-out concerts of film music in Vooruit which are unforgettable. The ever-smiling composer also held a film music seminar about sound and the use of music in contemporary Chinese films. He is a famous member of the World Soundtrack Academy and has written the scores for more than forty Japanese, Chinese and international films. He combines flexibility and passion with elegance. In his opinion, these are the two most important qualities of a composer.

Under the direction of conductor Dirk Brossé, the Brussels Philharmonic - the Orchestra of Flanders recorded sixteen numbers that paint a powerful picture of Umebayashi’s work. Following their execution of works by Craig Armstrong, Mychael Danna and Angelo Badalamenti the Brussels Philharmonic - the Orchestra of Flanders offered yet another brilliant interpretation this time of the scores of Umebayashi.

The album includes music from 2046, Zhou Yu’s Train, Curse of the Golden Flower, Incendiary, In The Mood For Love, Hannibal Rising, House of Flying Daggers, Tears For Sale and Sorekara. One of his most famous soundtracks, ‘Yumeji’s Theme’, is also featured on the CD. This score represented an international breakthrough for him when it featured in the film In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar Wai. This score was used again by Wong Kar Wai in My Blueberry Nights. Umebayashi could be considered as the in-house composer of the famous Chinese director.

‘For The Record: Shigeru Umebayashi’ was produced in partnership with Unicef.

    Tracklist:
    1. 2046 - Interlude1.2
    2. 2046 - Main Theme
    3. Zhou Yu's Train - Train
    4. Curse of the Golden Flower - Main Theme
    5. Incendiary - Main Theme
    6. 2046 - Polonaise
    7. Incendiary - To Victoria Station
    8. In The Mood For Love - Yumeji's Theme
    9. Curse of the Golden Flower - Theme of the Empress
    10. Hannibal Rising - Hollow Inside
    11. House of Flying Daggers - No Way Out
    12. House of Flying Daggers - Lovers
    13. House of Flying Daggers - Farewell No.2
    14. Tears for Sale - Vendetta March
    15. Curse of the Golden Flower - Mother & Jai
    16. Sorekara - Main Theme

Unfortunately, the editor(s) were so swamped in work that they never got back to me re: press accreditation (the deadline was yesterday), so if I'm going now it will have to be out of my own pocket. And that's a whole other ball game.... slant

Yes, indeed - I thought they would do Desplat? Or am I mistaken?
That said, I think Umebayashi's music could use that rerecording more than the Desplat pieces that were played - although I would kill for a recording of that Héros discret theme, because as opposed to the CD, it was with full orchestra!

If I - on impulse - should be able to attend this, what are some cheap alternatives for hotels/hostels in Ghent? I prefer my own room. Haven't really found any good alternatives on hotels.com, and most of the interesting things seem to have been taken already.

The cheapest Hotel I found in Ghent the first year I spent the night there, was around 70,- a night. I do see it's gotten more expensive nowadays...

    http://hotels.vliegtickets.nl/hotel/be/ … #topanchor

It's a nice little family hotel very nearby the train station with very good breakfast.

Later, I took a room more nearby the venue and within the city, paying around 80,- a night I believe. Not sure though, but that's generally the most popular one for guests of the festival, because of how it is located and since it's a big impersonal chain of hotels, which makes the quality just about right and not luxurious enough to pay too much. However, can't find it right now... Bregt, do you happen to remember? Wasn't it something like Novotel?

Yikes, those are some steep prices, Bob! I was thinking more along the lines of 30-50 Euros a night. So yeah, probably more in hostel territory.

Thor, considering I live very close to the whole show here in Gent (15 minutes walk), I can offer you a place for free, if you don't mind a very comfortable couch and at least now 2 confirmed guests (which are Bregt and Bob).

This of course for friday evening as saturday evening, considering I have to work on friday, I can't offer you the same opportunity if you plan to visit John Barry's concert as well

Let me know something, I can come and pick you up too in Gent if you come by train wink

I've just spent the last three hours researching the total price for this experience. Perhaps it'll be of interest to other foreigners considering it, but who think they may not afford it (like me). The time period is October 22 to October 25:

Airplane (Ryan Air) + shuttle bus, Norway: 530 NOK / 66 Euro (return included)
Hotel for 3 nights in central Ghent: 2300 NOK / 287 Euro
Shuttle bus from Charleroi Airport to Brussels: 177 NOK / 22 Euro (return included)
Train from Brussels to Ghent: 130 NOK / 16 Euro (return included)
World Soundtrack Awards ticket, Saturday night: 281 NOK / 35 Euro

Total is 3418 NOK, which equals 425 Euro or $587. Then of course, there's pocket money, foods, drinks and other expenses on top of that. I'm guessing the total would be about 5000 NOK, i.e. 622 Euro or $858, which is a hefty sum....BUT only about a hundred bucks more than the Burton/Elfman box when you take shipping, VAT and customs into consideration.

    Food for thought. smile

Wow, that's cool, Thomas! Thanks a lot for the offer. One night less on hotel is quite helpful (i.e. Friday to Saturday). I really have to consider this now, although airplane tickets and rooms are rapidly taken, so I have to make up my mind quickly.

So, just to confirm - you're saying that I can sleep on your couch from Friday to Saturday?

If you stay longer in Ghent, we'll guide you around. Since you will be in Ghent on Sunday as well, I certainly will take you to Ypres if you want, to see some WWI stuff, or to something you'd like to see (Bruges, more of Ghent).

On Friday evening, Bob and I (and perhaps others) plan to see some movies of the festival (including the new Sophia Copolla). Later on, we can try Belgian beers? wink

There's only one hostel in the whole of Ghent that still has available rooms on Saturday, and that is Casa Borsalino. Total is 186 Euro for two nights (if I sleep the first night at Thomas' place). And that's about the same price as the other hotel, so...

But in any case, I would be delighted to do some other stuff in the weekend too if I decide to do this.

I think I'll have decided by tomorrow.

So, Thomas, to get back to my question sent by mail: on Friday you work, so I can sleep at your place from Friday onwards? Cool! Will find myself a hotelroom for the Thursday night then.

By the way, I can also look into a hotel room for the full 3 nights, as that makes it less crowded on the couch (as Bregt knows, I'm a difficult sleeper around other people wink). I'll look into some options smile.

Thor, would you be interested to join a film on Friday evening. We were planning to see Sophia Coppola's new one. After that we were planning to see another one, but since it's a Doug Liman film (which will be released in regular cinema as well) and since you're not everyday in Ghent, perhaps we can discover the city with all of us (Thomas, Bob, ... and me)? smile
