Airplane pilots being "glorified bus drivers"? Think again.
Planes landing and taking off in very strong cross winds at Spanish airport, Bilbao, Spain.

Anyone who says that airline pilots are glorified bus drivers are just ignorant. That's some amazing video.
Also, I meant to post this before, but got too busy.

A Continental Airlines Dash 8 Q400 crashed five miles from the airport shortly ago in New York. There were 48 on board. As of now, there is little information to go on except that the plane went down about 5 miles from the destination airport and crashed into a house.

Update:
Very sadly, several major news networks are now reporting a confirmation that all 48 on board were killed along with one on the ground. This is a very sad day. My condolences to the families and friends of the victims. -

Very sad. These planes' security profile has been tremendously shaken through the last couple of years; the final investigation will tell us exactly happened of course, but people are starting to stir up on this type of aircraft.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

When I got up this morning I thought I had dreamt about the Schiphol crash for a little while... nothing here either!
But it did happen.
So weird. I usually read the news several times a day, but yesterday when I turned on the TV at 19.00 I thought, huh, what did I miss?? It already happened at 10.30 in the morning. Apparently I had spent all my time here on MT... -

Was on final approach after a go-around, and right before the runway it just fell from the sky and hit the ground tail-first. 9 dead, including the cockpit crew and passengers who were sitting in the back of the plane. Although too early, it look like either a stall or a fuel starvation. Will post more info and photos when i get home!Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Comparably, Turkish Airlines doesn't have a good safety record.

You know, it seems like there has been an unusually high rash of airline crashes in the past few months. I can think of four just off the top of my head, but I feel I'm missing one or two: the Continental flight running off the runway in Denver, the Hudson River crash, the Dash Q400 crash, and now this. My thoughts are with all those involved in this recent crash.
I'm trying to get my roommate -- who is terrified of flying -- onto a plane for a trip this summer, but these recent crashes certainly don't help quell his fears.
On a lighter note, has anyone seen Southwest Airlines new special livery on one of their 737s?

David, i am can sure you can explain your friend why airlines crashes happen, what goes wrong and how, and show the NUMBERS. It's still by far the safest way of transportation, no matter what. Investigations, documentaries, everything is made public so that people know what's going on and not live in ignorant fear.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Has anyone else seen Tom Clancy's HAWX that's out next week? It's far from realistic, but is just my type of flying game! -
