Time to re-open (from Scorereviews, in Maintitles) my favorite thread and what a better occasion than this KICK-ASS video showcasing strong cross-winds and what pilots with balls do to land their babes!

Did you take a look at the first video, the 2nd plane making a go-around? Those winds totally screwed them!

Haha, yeah, that was really crazy. I used to be really into aviation simulators as well -- MS Flight Simulator mostly -- but now that I since I've been in school for the last two years, my yoke has unfortunately been out of the job. I don't usually setup up the winds to be quite that brutal though!

When I go home over break to my gaming PC, you can be sure that I'll be flying! Mark my words, one of these days I will have a pilot's license. At least that is one of my big life goals!!!

I'm not a member, but I've definitely visited it many times.

Speaking accident investigations, have you ever seen some of those documentaries on the History/Discovery channel about famous airline accidents? I watched a few of them over the summer and actually found them to be really informative. The craziest one was where an ATC was murdered by a victim's husband because he was so swamped trying to cover two screens at once that a cargo jet and a passenger jet collided over Italy (I think). That explanation probably wasn't the best, but have you heard of that one? Here's a story the BBC did on it.

Right now I'm in school studying photojournalism, and I've been researching a guy down here who flies around the country on his own time (he's filthy rich and has a passion for adventure). Sometime early next year, he's going to take me up while I do photo story on him, and the whole idea just makes me salivate. Hopefully he might let me take control for a little while we're up in the air since he knows I too have a passion for aviation.

By the way -- looking forward to photos of your at home cockpit!

beer <---- But not while flying biggrin

Turn the volume up and take a close look at these 2 videos, nothing scary don't you worry wink

Just because we're normally sitting in the back and have limited or no view of the surroundings, most people don't have an idea what's going on up in the front; it's a whole new world and the pilots in there simply kick ass wink

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=qoR6xtdHEVg (Boeing 777)

("Minimums", 100, 50,40,30" come from the airplane itself, it's not the co-pilot announcing them. They're called altitude call-outs and notify the crow about how much distance (in feet) separates them (in real-time) from the ground. "Minimums" is the minimum speed the plane can fly with that configuration and weight and below that it'll stall and fall. Tells the pilots not to reduce the speed any more)

And now this, even more impressive. This is from an Airbus and the call-outs use a different voice. And to avoid giggles, "retard" is to notify the pilot to pull the engine throttle back to idle so that the plane can gradually reduce speed and gently touch the runway.

(take a CLOSE look out of the window) wink

Those first two, in the fog, are what you call true ILS approaches!

These two are pretty crazy and definitely took some real skill to get on the ground.

And another one with really strong crosswind:

You really have to admire these pilots for the split second decisions they have to make in these circumstances.

Do you ever visit any sites where you can listen to live ATC from around the world? I went here quite a bit over the summer. http://www.liveatc.net/

    Here it is:

    http://aviation-safety.net/photos/displ … amp;kind=C

"The approach was uneventful until, at approximately one mile from the runway threshold, the autopilot was momentarily disconnected and re-engaged. The aircraft then went above the glide-slope before developing a high rate of descent. At the same time, it deviated to the left of the centre-line. A go-around was initiated but the aircraft touched down heavily on the grass area to the left of the runway threshold. The right main landing gear broke off, causing damage to the right inboard flap,wing/body fairing and rear freight hold door and resulting in the loss of hydraulic System ‘A’. The aircraft continued for a short distance with the right engine, right outboard flap track fairing and right wing tip in contact with the ground before lifting off again. A Mayday was declared and the crew diverted to Birmingham (BHX) where weather conditions were good. An emergency landing was carried out (...) "

It has everything from 1943 to date. Every little minor incident ever recorded to the major disasters, it's the BIBLE of air crash investigation aficionados (together with http://www.ntsb.gov/ ) and it's the only one that's 100% confirmed and justified, sometimes the webmaster even gets exclusive info before others and he's quoted as a source. Enjoy!

One of the most impressive and famous videos available! Talking about timing eh? Tags? Evil birdy strike! (there's more info below the video)

Alternate link: http://www.flightlevel350.com/Aircraft_ … -8457.html (be sure to check which version you're watching, there's a low quality vs high quality option)

note: you can also hear the real ATC communications' tape between the pilot and the control tower. Notice the calmness and absolute professionalism, these guys rock!

Wow, indeed, he was almost there! At least to me it looks like he was almost there... but what do I know. It must be very complicated. If he did land, would he have lost some wheels too?

I'm amazed at how much these planes look like toys or models planes in these crosswind videos... dizzy
