    How does it compare with other Portman scores? To be honest, it's been many years since I bought a new score by her - most of them are so similar to one another I didn't see the point in buying any more. Does this have something extra to offer? There's no denying the appeal of her melodic music, but I don't need another variation on Cider House Rules (etc).

    It's the same like anything else in the genre she's written. Solemn, melodic, calm.

    Yeah, it doesn't do anything new and if you weren't into Portman before, this will not convert you. If you want something like that, listen to Beloved, her best work to date (and with no strings or anything resembling a traditional orchestra in sight).

  6. Counting the assignments not listing, coming up, in that listing, she's got like nearly ten or more scores coming. Hollywood seems to sudenly have gone Portman crazy. I'm not complaining. :-)

    Now if only they'd go Shire crazy, Barry crazy, etc...

    More Portman goodness (who is on a pretty good roll lately!)

    ONE DAY

    niversal-Island Records has announced the soundtrack album for the upcoming romance One Day. The album features four tracks from the score by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman, as well as a number of songs from the movie by artists including Elvis Costello, Del Amitri, Tricky, Fatboy Slim, Primal Scream, Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating, Corona and Tears for Fears. The soundtrack will be released on August 23, 2011. Check back on this page for audio clips. One Day based on the bestselling novel by David Nicholls is directed by Lorne Scherfig and stars Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess and Patricia Clarkson. The movie is set to be released on August 19 by Focus Features. For more information on the film, visit the official movie website.

  13. I thought the same thing and started loooking around, but I found the websites of a couple people who worked on the score, and they claim both composers. Further investigation is required besides an internet search.

    One was a vocalist, an attractive brunette lady. I can't recall her name at the moment.

  22. Okay, first list time! I decided to do a Top 3, because I easily had my top three, but 5 or more would have been more difficult to decide on and take more time (and I'm in the middle of a workday, haha). I also wanted to make it easier on myself as I get the hang of this! smile I picked Rachel Portman, because I recently got a new score of hers (new to me) that immediately made it into my favorites, which I was super surprised about! So here are my Favorite 3 Scores by Rachel Portman.

    1) The Cider House Rules (1999)
    Some of the most beautiful music ever written. The piano pacing just melts me. I have a soft spot for it especially because I have the Main Titles as piano sheet music and have been playing it since I saw the film in the theater with my parents back in high school and we were all taken by the beautiful film, it’s writing, performances and ethical dilemmas. But mostly we were all taken by the music. It was always one of my dad’s favorite pieces for me to play. Now that he’s passed, the music means even more to me now. And while I don’t listen to the score as much anymore because it brings some sadness with it now, I still think it’s Rachel Portman’s best.

    2) Grey Gardens (2009)
    This score had been on my wishlist for while, and I decided to just buy it last year, a pandemic soothe I guess, and I’m not sure I’ve ever been more delighted by one of Portman’s themes from the first listen. The theme is so simple, but just so good. There a certain spring in the step of this theme that just makes me smile and just I love it.

    3) Chocolat (2001)
    There's no other score of Portman’s that is more of its own character to me than this one. And she just does an amazing job making the music sounds like the wind, making it ooze romance, and take on all the characteristics of the lusciousness of chocolate - it’s all there and it’s delicious. I remember coming out of the theater with my friend Dallas and our mouths were watering so badly, that we had to run next-door to the Barnes & Noble coffee shop to get a mocha.

    Rachel Portman is a great composer, but also a source of frustration sometimes. She writes these gorgeous, pastoral themes (your top 3 are great examples), but then she repeats them endlessly with just minor variations.

    THE CIDER HOUSE RULES is my favourite too. EMMA is another must-have. And be sure to check out THEIR FINEST, which she did as recently as 2016. Alas, it has 47 tracks(!), many of them less than a minute, but the music itself was one of the highlights that year.
    I am extremely serious.

  25. Also I think it’s admirable she’s so consistent. I once heard an interview where she said has her style that she loves, and has no desire to do different things. So even if her variation is mild, at least it's intentional! smile
  26. Rachel Portman's not really a composer I have gotten into. Her theme for Hart's War is one of my favourites and would definitely be in my Top 10 themes (and wound probably feature in any Top 10 tracks list I put together). But, other than that, I can't think of anything else of note.

    I love Legend of Bagger Vance, it works so brilliant in the film. And I got to know her through Cider House Rules. But still several of my favorites (even if it are specific tracks) missing from your selection there Alan, definitive must heard ones

    Only You: the end explodes with Portman pride
    War of the Buttons: lovely upbeat Portman
    Nicholas Nickleby: main theme is a keeper
