  1. I know that there are a few iPod topics around - and I'm looking through them bit by bit - but I'd like to have somewhere central where I can add questions I have as I get used to using my iPod.

    I'm downloading iTunes at the moment and I'm sure I'll be back...

    I remember my first iPod days...pretty damn daunting! slant
    If it hadn't been for Erik's patient help, I might have thrown the towel in altogether.
    Well, not really: slightly too expensive a gadget for that...but it's hardly likely I would have been able to juggle things with playlists, sorting by genre, et cetera. While there's still several things I feel could be changed for the better on a functional design level (like nested folder structures: it's impossible to make a playlist of *albums*. Just of *tracks* dizzy ) I'm happily using my iPod every day!

  4. I am also looking forward to using my new gadget. I suppose I just need to give things a try and see what happens.

    One thing I was glad I did even before charging my iPod was to go through the settings in iTunes and get those the way I want them.

    Hmm... maybe I don't understand you correctly, but when you use the 'select all tracks' option within an album when making your playlist, you have the complete album in your playlist, right? And when you don't use 'shuffle', you'll listen to the albums in the right order... Or do you want something else?

    Yes, I think you misunderstand me, Bob: I'm talking about a playlist that consists of *albums* rather than of *tracks* alone.

    With 160 GB gadgets *track* playlists are rather cumbersome, and as for "album playlists" (the way I think *you*mean it: making a playlist that consists of one specific album)...well...I have many thousands of albums on my iPod, and many TENS of thousands more in storage, so that's a task I'm not even relishing THINKING about! dizzy )

    Well, I know making a playlist of just one album is useless, since you have the same thing when just playing the album, I mean the selection of several albums for one playlist. For example, I have a Lord of the R... ahem, Star Wars playlist, which I made by combining all the Star Wars 2-disc soundtracks by using the 'select all tracks' option present at the album. So with just 1 pressing of the thumb, I selected the full album, and within seconds, I had all 12 discs in a list.

    Well, that's only useful when you want to play ALL the albums in that list in the order you have added them! (Or all the tracks in those albums utterly randomly if you'd selected 'Shuffle').

    The way I envision an Album Playlist is something along the line of "Albums I Haven't Listened To Yet" or "My Favourite John Williams Albums". That would allow you to choose an ALBUM from a playlist.

    That would be an absolutely wonderful way of organizing and prioritising your collection.

  10. Being used to getting given a power adaptor with almost every gadget I've ever bought, I'm disappointed not to get one with my new iPod.

    At the risk of seeming lazy I'm wondering whether the jack for the headphones is a standard size or whether it is Apple-specific? I've never liked the earphones that come as standard and want to use my "cans".

    Idiosyncracies? Hmmmm...

    Well, I think it's much to do with the size of the iPod.
    With a 4 to 8 GB one, I don't think you would really *need* any organisation (aside from your own preferences, of course). With a 160 one, the human mind simply isn't capable of keeping track without aids, so some organisation is an absolute *requirement*. And then it makes sense to make organisation 'layered', as that's the way the mind generally is thought (and taught) to work.

    These seem solutions to create random lists...doesn't suit my need at al, I'm afraid...
    Anyway, I have created my own solution by fooling around with the 'Genre' option, through which organisation by album IS possible. (I have created genres like 'New Pop' and 'New OST' and such. That works.

    Don't worry, the headphones are standard and you can use any other headphone instead.

    It's a standard mini-jack, I'm happy to say.
    At least THAT wasn't made proprietary by Apple (most things else ARE).

    Does anyone else have this curious problem I have with my iPod (well, seems to actually be iTunes, since this is also how it displays on my PC) - if I add album art by just copying and pasting the cover then it becomes slightly off-centre (ie the whole thing is slightly shifted to the right, with the extreme right of the cover ending up displaying on the left hand side). If I specify a filename (or URL) to add the artwork then the problem doesn't happen.

    Not sure if I explained it very well...

  16. That sounds weird - and annoying.

    I'm populating iTunes with my tracks at the moment. All the artwork is tagged using MediaMonkey. Let's see how it looks when it's finished!

  18. Question: I have 2 folders with a total of 10,233 mp3s in them. I select both folders to "Add Folder To Library..." Why am I getting over 11,000 songs listed in the resulting library?

    Also, I save a playlist (as a *.m3u) of these 10,233 tracks and when I import this playlist into iTunes the number of songs is 10,229. Why are 4 tracks being ignored?

    I don't suppose there's any way to carry over play counts from somewhere like MediaMonkey over to iTunes?

    And...

    Is there a way to set iTunes to monitor a couple of folders for new tracks and for it to automatically add them to my music library list?

    I don't know what's causing that problem. What version of iTunes are you using? Where are you getting your artwork from? Have you tried to use a different file? How many albums are affected by this?

  23. I'm really liking the control that iTunes is offering when it comes to listening to my music - and I love Cover Flow.

    My second question is aimed at when I am updating my music library. When I initially populated my iTunes music library I chose the two folders that contained all the music I wanted included in this library. Each of these folders on my PC contains subfolders divided into folders by original CD.

    From now on when I add more subfolders (as I acquire more music) to the two folders I used to fill my iTunes music library I would like iTunes to monitor these two folders for new tracks - it's like syncing the music library with the folders. Is this clearer - and is it possible?

    At the moment, I have to add manually individual files to the music library as and when I get them.

    This probably doesn't help but I seem to have no problem with artwork displaying in iTunes that I've added using MediaMonkey.

  27. Thanks Erik. I had seen a subfolder that was in the newly-created "iTunes" folder when I installed iTunes and I suspected that it's function was to do with this. This article confirms this.

    I've got the latest iTunes (but have had the issue for the last several versions). It only happens with artwork that I copy and paste (either from viewing it on my own computer or at Amazon or somewhere) and it happens with anything I add by that method. If I add the artwork either by downloading it automatically (sadly lots of soundtracks not available) or by manually selecting a file (either on my computer or a URL) then I don't have the problem, but that way takes longer. It's only a slight inconvenience since I do have an alternative way which works, but is very odd since I can't find anyone else who has the same issue. Maybe there is some weird problem specific to my PC.
