Excellent. A great thematic adventure score with a heart. One of my favorite scores of 2006.

    I can only concur! Excellent!
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

The essential Nino Rota film music collection (Nino Rota)

Essential? And it doesn't even contain Il gattopardo? I don't get album producers sometimes. They call an album essential but they ignore the best stuff by the composer and they fill up the album with alot of music that isn't really that great.

    My rating: ***

    Slalom (Ennio Morricone)

The main theme is truly crazy and unique. Decent secondary theme, though it also has some crazy elements. Besides those there are some easy listening stuff and some jazzy stuff. No melodies truly blow me away though. Having the two themes on a compilation would be sufficient, but other than that this album is mostly for collectors.

    My rating: ***

Actually - Erik will hate this and I strongly suggest he averts his eyes now and DOES NOT READ the rest of this post - I think The Adventures of Mutt is where Williams comes closest to his "classic" sound in this score. Nobody else has ever written film music like it, but it reminds me of The Basket Game, The Asteroid Field, that sort of thing, that nobody else really has ever done.

The music written is fine. I actually like it as a stand alone peice of music but it has absolutely NO dramatic weight.

    -Erik-

I must agree. Williams thing about Mutt being 'like Errol Flynn for 60 seconds of the movie' because he was holding a sword and swinging on a rope seems a very arbitrary basis for a major musical choice.

I don't know though, something about that 40 seconds of the Russian theme is more catchy than all the other broad music in the film. Closer to 'Scherzo for Motorcycle' to my ears, and with a bit of that Prisoner of Azkaban knack for catchy ornamentation.

(As for the film, blecch. I did watch it again on TV -- the roger moore bond comparison is apt. View to a Kill?)

This knocks the pants off what Silvestri wrote for either of the films.

I still can't get my head around the very strange album, but I do like the score, a lot.

This is right up my street and I'll be getting it. It helps ( me at least ) that this is the sort of release that sells slowly.

That's what people said about Agora too.

Agora made an instant impression on me, Jane didn't

I just like Marianelli more when he goes V for Vendetta / Agora style than Atonement / Jane Eyre style

    Dragonheart (Edelman)

Me likes. First time I've heard the entire album instead of just the famous theme. It's pretty good. I need to listen to it several more times to really get to know the themes though. Thanks to whoever recently mentioned this score in this thread thereby inspiring me to give the album a go.

    XYZ - Composer

I'm not saying! All I will say is that it is MAGNIFICENT, one of the top five film music albums ever released; and the review will appear at www.movie-wave.net at 12 noon tomorrow if you're in the United Kingdom (and, frankly, if you're not then you should reset your clocks to our time zone anyway since it would make life so much more convenient for everyone).
