I decided to start a thread about Michiru Oshima, one of my favorite composers.

    Some info:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michiru_Oshima
    http://www.michiru-oshima.net/ (in japanese)

    Her best scores:

    Fullmetal Alchemist - Tsuisou - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfc2Lqi1 … re=related
    Fullmetal Alchemist - Butou - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHMss4zW4VU
Year One In The North - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of7iFBCAihY
    Planet of Life - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgUeI2K6pMA
    The Copy Cat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPa2mjM_ … re=related
    Xam'd Lost Memories - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu5ocFYV … re=related
    Xam'd Lost Memories - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VpeTssU … re=related

    Other scores I recommend:

    Tenchijin vol. 2&3
    The Weathering Continent 1&2
    Goodbye Ozu Teacher
    Arc the lad 1&2
    Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
    Bizan
    Umineko (Seagull)
Ashita no kioku (Memories of Tomorrow)
    Le Chevalier D'Eon
    Sora no Woto
  1. Yay, another female composer!!

I agree, her work for Fullmetal Alchemist was one of the best things about that series.

I recently discovered Oshima and think her work is fantastic----she's one of my new favorites! I've been able to download quite a few of her older scores on ffshrine.org, but there are so many more! Sadly, I can't afford the to buy them from Japan. Does anyone know of any sites/blogs where her scores are shared? I'm also a trader of real CDs, and will trade an original CD from my own collection for a CDR of an Oshima score that I don't have. That's probably the only way I'll ever get my hands on them!

    Indeed she is!

I don't have Nabari, but I found this, someone uploaded the score on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl6ZOjpX … re=related

    Beautiful theme!

Thanks a lot Cristian, I just listened to all the links and I have to say I was very impressed, this is a composer who actually composes in an unashamedly "old fashioned" melodic way with full, rich themes, I'll DEFINITELY be looking into Michiru Oshima.

  2. Now this is indeed top stuff... Old fashioned, theme-based composing = entirely my thing.

Grand & sweeping melodies in Planet of Life & Xam'd Lost Memories. love

I will have to look into this talented lass... Her music's mesmerizing.

Is there some sort of 'Best of' compilation with the works above available?

You're welcome, I'm glad you like the music from those links.

The first score you should look into is her masterpiece, Year One in the North

This score is in my top ten of all time, yes is that good. It has all the things a film music fan could ask for: memorable themes, it's melodic, has an epic/majestic/grand feel to it like Legends of the Fall by Horner, I think the 90 piece orchestra + choir really did they job here. The last cue on the CD is a great one, we hear the main theme and then the choir kicks in, wow great stuff, goosebump moments, what a great way to finish a score. Another great cue is The Flower of Awaji, just beautiful I don't think I've ever heard a cue more beautiful than this one. I can't praise this score enough I think it's one of those perfect scores with one of the greatest theme i've ever heard.

The score was recorded in Moscow, orchestra is the Moscow International Symphonic Orchestra, conductor is Konstantin D. Krimets.

Yes there are two CD that I know of. First was released in 2005 called Cinema Music Best Michiru Oshima and it's very good, I recommend it, and the other one it's called Michiru Oshima: TV Music Best, I don't have this one: http://www.screenarchives.com/title_det … USIC-BEST/
  3. That's great, I'm thinking of just blind buying some of her works, and that Legends of the Fall comparison already has me salivating like a kid visiting a candy store... cheesy

Thanks Cristian, I'm always up for new discoveries, especially of the kind I'm hearing right here.

  4. Year One In The North is what I'd also recommend as a good starting point.

Nice article. However, there is no mention of Yôko Kanno?
