  1. I think they were properly tagged. I do a lot of the tagging myself so that they are all labeled correctly for my library system so I think that's fine. The Japanese scores that don't seem to be listed don't have the unusual characters as far as I can see.

One funny thing I noticed is that I recently bought one of Les Baxter's scores and it came as a series of long suites. I divided the suites up myself into smaller, more manageable sizes and when one of these just played it was displayed fine.

It's not a problem, I'm just curious about the differences.

  2. Last comment on the subject of missing last.fm track listings.

The common factor I'm seeing with tracks I'm playing on iTunes that are not appearing on my last.fm "recently listened tracks" list is that they have generic "Track 1", "Track 2", "Track 3" titles as a result of either me calling them that as a result of foreign script or if there's a suite I've divided up myself and just labeled them unimaginatively.

Ah yes, these are not "well formed" track titles and are ignored since some time. Before this, there were a lot of pages with "Track 1" and "Untitled 01" on last.fm (http://www.last.fm/search?q=track+01&from=ac) messing up statistics, because these got a lot of scrobbles. smile

  3. In a related point, I'm finding that a lot of composers' "Main Titles" tracks are being scrobbled together.

I like "AudioTrack 01 - 0:00 - [unknown]" - informative but at the same time not!

I wish last.fm would write into their scrobbling software some sort of recognition app. that would automatically switch last name, first name tags into first name, last name tags. I have all my music organized by last name and boy does this piss a lot of last.fm users off when it is scrobbled that way. I know in my earlier years last.fm wouls do the switch but that stopped a while ago. So now I have 1000 some odd tracks scrobbled for John Williams and 1000 some odd tracks scrobbled for Williams, John and so on.

I couldn't stand having my library listed knowing there was these sorts of discrepancies...which says more about me than any picture could! shame

Seems like last.fm are ending free radio stations to your mobile:

I've just seen it as a novelty value thing rather than something useful. I have an iPod/Creative Zen to listen to music on the move.

  5. It always amuses me that when I play something by composer Frank Skinner (in this case Magnificent Obsession) the photo of comedian Frank Skinner appears.

In fact, it probably raises more of a smile than Skinner's comedy does.

I also saw him with David Baddiel at John Barry's concert in 1998 so he gets kudos points from me cool

  6. Geek alert!

I usually take great care in tagging all my digital music files the way I want them so I know that all the information like the artists listed in last.fm will all be listed in the same format: composer set out first name then surname (I see some users whose artists can be that same format or surname first then first name, or even listing the orchestra, etc).

So, knowing that my artist list should be correct, the fact that my last.fm artist library total has been stuck on 999 for several days has me wondering in anticipation who will be the 1,000th artist in my library...

  7. Geek alert (part 2)

So after having been stuck on 999 artists in my list, a few minutes after posting about it above the iTunes shuffle brought me my 1,000th last.fm artist: Paolo Buovino.

Ferrari is a 2003 Italian biographical TV movie centred around the life of Enzo Ferrari. Reading about the film on imdb.com I see one reviewer starts his review by saying how intrusive the music is: wall-to-wall strings that are so pervasive that when you would expect there to be strings for the dramatic moments there has already been so much music that any dramatic impact has been lost. He even says that when the music stops, that's dramatic in itself! Not a good review for the music!

But as a stand-alone listen it's a nice enough score.

  8. It's funny sometimes when the film music genre meets "the real world" and the confusion that it can create. Using last.fm and having it collect all the stats of listening preferences it is funny to see one of John Williams' scores being (potentially) confused with the guitarist of the same name.

One example I have seen is composer Frank Skinner's music being accompanied by the UK comedian. And now, there's composer Steve Lynch being "fronted" by the - admittedly - more famous rock guitarist.

  9. What in god's name have they done to their site? Their new design is truly horrible.

With the old design I used to enjoy seeing my listening habit stats and keeping an eye on what my last.fm friends were listening to. At no point in my 4-5 year experience with last.fm did I ever want to use their site as a site for making recommendations to me or using them to listen to music. I certainly had no interest in what the wider populace were listening to.

The new design seems to be imposing its own take on what kind of site I want. Maybe I'm some weird aberration and am out of step with what people want with a site like last.fm but this new version is not what I want. And I've not seen many positive comments from users. Which is in stark contrast to the tone of the site's own PR.

Ever since the scrobbling functionality was severely limited as apps are being abandoned, I wasn't very keen on last.fm anyway.
So I guess it's time to move off.

Last.fm? Haven't used that in 10 years, at least. I wasn't even aware it still existed. In this age of Spotify and Wimp and what-have-you, it's basically superflous, old and creaky.
    I am extremely serious.

I used to scrobble my tracks via SPotify but this doesn't work anymore, even thought the option is still there. sad

I'm sure that how I used last.fm isn't the way the developers envisioned. Rather that use it as a way of discovering new music or keeping tabs on events that might be of interest to me, I was quite happy seeing my listening history being "reported" on the site, browsing through my top artists/albums/tracks, adding cover art to albums that weren't listed, and seeing what my last.fm friends were listening to at the same time I was listening to something (sometimes our listening would even coincide).

It seems like it's really difficult to do any of this at the moment, and all these functions now seem to have been dispersed throughout the site rather than making them easily available in one place. And, as I mentioned, there seems to be a push to use the site as a place to listen to music (whether music in my own library or tracks recommended to me as a result of my own listening history (it would be interesting to see if that was any use)).

  12. Looking to see how much of the last.fm functions I use routinely, scrobbling seems to be working and tallies with the "Top Artist" list. But, not much else seems to be available.

    More statistics!
    http://www.last.fm/user/Kspoosh/listening-report/year

    Top 5 composers
    Thomas Newman
    Alexandre Desplat
    Carter Burwell
    Michael Giacchino
    John Williams

Not everything that I played on Spotify is being streamed to Last.fm though. I think the album stats are a bit wrong, as the more tracks it counts, the more it seems to be scrobbled. I don't think I played Finding Dory more than 2 times for example.
