If it's sunny where you are go outside now and look straight up at the thin crescent moon. Go up a distance of about 5 moon diameters and slightly to the left and if you are lucky you will see Venus - in broad daylight!! Somehow that is spectacular!

I couldn't see it with the naked eye (maybe bad eyesight?) but it is really bright with a pair of binoculars. Take care though if you use binoculars - the sun being out means you have to take care when viewing the moon with binoculars.

ON NO ACCOUNT VIEW THE SUN WITH BINOCULARS. YOU WILL BE BLINDED IF YOU DO.

This week one evening the street lanterns were out while it was already dark. A joy for Julian who is with the observatory club and likes to go out when the weather is clear to watch the stars. It was so clear, we could see a lot. Mars was visible too and it looks like a red star compared to the other stars and planets. I like it when he points out to me which is what.
    smile

Oh, and as they say at the observatory club: you can only look at the sun through a telescope once. Twice technically speaking. And then never again.

Which is true of course. Really dangerous.

He explained a lot about filters and everything because he likes to photograph sunspots. He also told us a story about a friend who buyed new equipment, filters and such, to watch and photograph the sun. Suddenly one filter had burst. Thankfully he was not looking while that happened, otherwise he would've become blind instantly.

Sir Isaac Newton once propped his eyelids open to see how long he could stare at the sun, afterwards he had to stay in a completely darkened room for a couple of days, he was lucky not to lose his sight.

    True story.

  1. I would never look directly at the sun through binoculars or telescope even when they are fitted with filters.

In the past, for observing sunspots, I have projected an image of the sun's surface onto a sheet of white card. Works a treat.

Yes, that's the way I've looked at sun spots in the past.

The Magic of Reality for iPad... recommended!!

I just wrote this on Facebook:
"Wow, I got this book/app today and it's awesome!! The illustrations are beautiful and each chapter has an interactive feature: animation, movie clip, a game or simulation. All possibilities of the iPad are used, for instance there's one feature where you can tilt the iPad and one where you blow into the mic. It's educational and entertaining, but most of all: it looks stunning."

Here some more info about the features:

    http://richarddawkins.net/videos/643252 … ns-trailer

Julian and I had a lot of fun already breeding the frogs and firing Newton's cannon! cheesy

While I love paper books, this is the future of the book really. When you move to the next page, the illustration stays, as long as needed, only the text moves (no more see figure 12.d and things like that!!). The illustrations are wonderful and moving as well.

And the interactive stuff is so nice, I'm just thinking of apps like this with the other books as well! Imagine how it would be walking through the Museum of All Shells. Or make genetic changes to Arthropoda. Dawkins' books are full of experiments like this and we can only read it and see some examples illustrated but it would be more fun to experiment by ourself.

Nope, it was overcast here as well. The usual situation when it comes to anything interesting to see in the night sky.

I went to a really nice party that night ( dinner party for a friends birthday ) and me and few others went out every half an hour or so, it was reasonably clear directly overhead and stars could be seen but in the direction of the moon a blue glow was about as close as it got.

    biggrin

I remember some friends were puzzled that we'd called our little kitten Gomez, we just wanted a name that we thought no one else would have ( except maybe in Mexico, I wonder if they have pets called Gomez? ) for their pet, it stuck and fits him perfectly, even those friends came around to his name though some shorten it to 'Mez'.

He's 15 yrs old now, hard to believe he was still only a kittenish 1 yr old when I first logged on to FSM. dizzy

I'm very jealous of you, Timmer. I'd have a Gomez of my own if I weren't allergic.

  6. I am not sure if statistics is a science.
If so, than this is one of my favourite scientists... Hans Rosling is one of the peoepl who quiet often are asked to give TED speaches.

Here is one of his latest speeches he gave in Qatar, where he addresses the statistical links between religion and sexuality...

Hilarious, serious and enlighting at the same time...

  7. On the face of it, not a particularly exciting photo of the sun:

    http://twitpic.com/aa6s7g

Until you realise that it is a photo of the sun taken through the Earth! It's not light or X-rays but neutrinos!!

I wonder how they detected the image if neutrinos don't actually interact with much?
