You mean the thing from Men In Black 3!?
  1. The similarity is uncanny but the photo from the movie has a distinct nose that clearly distinguishes it as a different species. wink

    oops, edit.

    http://godlessgeekblog.blogspot.gr/2012 … scent.html

This version of Curiosity's descent and landing was created by film maker Bard Canning, using HD stills from Curiosity's Mars Descent Imager (MARDI), as well as hundreds of motion tracking shots; which basically just means digitally moving and zooming the camera to make up for missing frames, in order to increase the video's frame rate from a blistering 4 FPS to 30. The images in the film were enhanced and color corrected for the sake of quality, and the sound, obviously, was added for effect. Go HERE, For a more detailed explanation of the work that went into making this render of Curiosity's landing on Mars.

Video is real, enhanced with real still but sfx is fake. Added for effect. Shame, it would be amazing if it had real sound although i believe it would be very hard for any microphone's membrane to withstand entering a planet's atmosphere.

I posted the following towards the bottom of the previous page:

"As far as I understand it, yes the first part is real (the descent) but the audio effects have been added. The images after landing are just hi-res photos that have had artificial "panning shot" perspectives added (as well as the obligatory audio track)."

Did you miss it or do you want more information?

  4. I bet you can't get it in kids' chemistry sets nowadays, that's for sure.

I remember when you could buy test tubes and all sorts of chemicals in hobby shops.

  5. We bought a chemistry set once - just the once - for David a few years back. We bought it on the strength of memories of being able to do things with these sets.

Now, there's so much H&S that all the fun has been taken out of them. And people wonder why kids are not enthused by science.

Now, where is my Sigma-Aldrich catalogue so I can get me some proper chemicals!

  6. Did anyone watch Felix Baumgarten step out of his capsule? He dropped like a stone! But what a landing! Like stepping off a bus.

What was surprising was that, at 108 metres high, it was the second-tallest building in Denmark! Is that right?

Yep. We have rather strict requirements on the heights of new buildings in danish cities. I guess it makes sense as a giant skyscraper in the middle of this would kind of ruin the look.

I'm sure being a small country also has something to do with it. Also, being densely populated, I guess it's difficult building something big without bothering alot of people, who will protest such plans loudly.

I do wish we could have at least one skyscraper though. I do find them fascinating.

  11. NASA making big "one for the record books" announcement Friday, 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT), following a big dust storm they had been tracking.

No way the major "one for the record books" announcement is about, "Hey! Lok at these awsome phots and video of the dust storm! OMG!!!". I have to conclude, unless they're that dumb to make such a statement of "one for the record books", that the storm has uncovered something/things. I'll rule out remnents of buildings or structures, as surely this would be worded as something far, far more huge, and say they likely found fossilized bones that the storm uncovered, of some animal from a long, long time ago.
