    Hello everyone,

I want to make a trumpet compilation. I have some scores in mind that have perfect tracks for a trumpet compilation I think, but I was curious about your recommendations. What are your favourite trumpet tracks?

    Fire away!
  1. Depending on what kind of trumpet writing you like.

Basically most of Americana scores have great trumpet writing, Apollo 13 is a most notable example. Broken Arrow has some nice solos, Crimson Tide has them, but buried in tracks, I think Roll Tide would make for very nice compilation material.

A lot of John Barry's solos and Ennio Morricone pieces, Plind and Timmer will help better here, both composers trained as trumpeteers and most notably they are able to write material for the instrument that has higher pitch than anything else.

From Americana and John Williams some underscore track from Saving Private Ryan where the trumpet is in a Coplandesque dialogue with the French horn would be a nice addition, just not the Hymn.

Good question. I was thinking of Rachel Portman at first. Hart's War, Legend of Bagger Vance. And Apollo 13 indeed. And Red Cliff, because I'm listening to it now. I forgot about Crimson Tide, but that would be good for diversity.

    Thanks so far!

There can be no such compilation without John Williams, of course.

Beautiful stuff like BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY and JFK, his trumpet concerto or any given of his many fanfares and themes or film marches.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. The first 33 seconds of the "Main Title" from "Dances With Wolves".

The cue from the (unreleased) score to "Falling Down" for the end climax. I don't want to link to it if you haven't seen it, because it's a fucking excellent film and watching the ending first is wrong.

Mark Isham's "black dahlia" and Terence Blanchard's "Requiem for Katrina" are the best works in the genre that come to mind now.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  3. Two other trumpeteers.

For sure the Goldsmith theme from Chinatown is a must. Surprised it wasn't mentioned before.

Excellent additions would be Deguello from Tiomkin's The Alamo and Morricone's Per Un Pugno Di Dollari from A Fistful Of Dollars (on the GDI CD "Per Un Pugno Di Dollari #2" or " A Fistful Of Dollars on the For A Few Dollars More/A Fistful Of Dollars CD. NOT the "Titoli" track, which is the main theme!)

For an excellent fun romp, try the main theme to the 1967 Casino Royale by famous trumpet artist Herb Alpert!

    So far, in random order:

    Apollo 13 - Main Title?
Red Cliff - Battle to Battle & Blood Color
    Hart's War - Finale Salute
    Independence Day - End Titles?
    Legend of Bagger Vance
    Jurassic Park
    The Matrix

Listening now, I'm not sure about the Independence Day End Titles... not much trumpet there...

You should really have Williams' JFK or BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY there. They're brilliant trumpet pieces.

(Strange. I feel all sweaty now and have a nigh-incontrollable urge to board a plane to Oslo, carrying only a double-bladed axe, utterly naked except for a Batman cowl so's not to be recognised )

I'm slightly more concerned about being allowed ON the plane in such a get-up...
