    NP: ZABRISKIE POINT (Pink Floyd/various)

Another score assignment for PF, although Jerry Garcia's love theme and its umpteen variations is arguably the most famous part of the soundtrack. Weird stuff, but hypnotizing. Also includes country songs and period songs...

Is this the score where Careful with That Axe, Eugene comes from?

Almost. The song was written prior to that, but re-recorded and renamed ""Come in Number 51, Your Time Is Up" for the film (including new vocals by Gilmour).
    I am extremely serious.
  1. NP: Beneath The Planet of The Apes - Leonard Rosenman

I'm listening to this for the first time and it is reminding me how little this excellent composer is mentioned. His style is distinctive and not to everyone's taste. But set in the correct environment there's very few composers who can write as good as him.

His music can be a bit "samey" as he seems to use similar musical devices throughout his scores. But I really enjoy his stuff when I am in the correct mood.

I know! I love the Buck theme. And also, the new version of the Mamut theme from The Meltdown, used as a theme for Sid's parenthood.

    It's film music?

Yes ( I didn't do an OT post in the wrong thread wink ). It's an original song score for the film starring Nastassja Kinski and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

Tom Waits was Oscar nominated in the old 'Best Musical Score' category.

He's scores over a dozen films, TV moives, as I recall.

punk One of the best tracks, for sure.
  4. My first listen to music for quite some time:

"Tirame Un Palo Que No Este Enjabonado" - Luna de Avellaneda - Angel Illarramendi

A beautiful piece of music. Soothing.

  5. 2

"Opening and Deatheater Attack" - Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince - Nicholas Hooper

The ostinato of the deatheater attack is noteworthy but it flags when there is no Williams influences.

  6. 3

"Medley: First Subway / Bedroom" - The 4 Horsemen of The Apocalypse - Andre Previn

Certainly sounds of its time with an emphasis of strings.

  7. 4

"Les Sables Mouvants" - Les Sables Mouvants - Vladimir Cosma

A lyrical piece, dominated by a lovely acoustic guitar. One of those lovely pieces of music buried in obscurity.

  8. 5

"Investigation" - The Ghost Writer - Alexandre Desplat

Not sure if I enjoy this one as much as most. A standard investigative track full of typical Desplat mannerisms.

  9. 6

    "L'Exode" - Le Train - Philippe Sarde

A frantic track this one. I assume the train is hurtling along to somewhere!

  10. 7

"The Car" - Night Crossing - Jerry Goldsmith

It is not long before a Goldsmith track appears in a random playlist. A typical example of his quality.

"Assassin" - Bangkok Dangerous - Brian Tyler

I am one of those people who thinks that Tyler in action mode is well worth a listen. It may not be new but it is completely satisfying.

"Harry In Winter" - Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire - Patrick Doyle

One of the highlights of the non-Williams Harry Potter music. A beautiful theme.

    Indeed. Absolutely gorgeous theme.

"The Team" - Age of Heroes - Michael Richard Plowman

A rousing piece from a good score.

I love how Illarramendi uses the main theme in the score. First, as a romantic theme (though almost sounds like another theme), then, as a very sorrowful one, like in that cue.

Well, you can't expect that everything sound like Williams. Still, I like more Desplat's Death Eater theme.

One of my favorite HP themes.

At only 18 minutes LE TRAIN is a score I love listening to from begining to end, a fantastic score and in my all time top 20 score listens.

This is the only FSM score I've ever found in a "second hand shop", I think it was about £3, a good buy for sure! cool

    OMG you're right! 30 years!
For me this film was what converted me completely to "the geek side"!
    Movie brilliance!
    Must play the score today!
  15. Attack The Block - Steven Price, Felix Burton and Simon Ratcliffe

A weird mix of hip hop, synths and orchestra. I couldn't find a single theme, but at least it has better use of electronics than Hanna:

Sometimes, a 20 minute score can have more going on than a 75 minute album cut from an even longer score. LE TRAIN would certainly be such a case.

    NP: WILLOW (James Horner)

Fullbodied adventure score with familiar Horner licks and tricks. A bit too bombastic for my taste these days, though.

The limitations of Hooper's score for Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince are highlighted - for me anyway - when it's placed next to Williams' themes. John Williams' music is the world of Harry Potter no matter how good any of the other scores are.

    Zulu Dawn - Elmer Bernstein

Never mind that it was a bloody battle in real life, it's a jolly romp in the score!
Revenge is sweet... Revenge is best served cold... Revenge is ice cream.
  17. Angels in America (Thomas Newman)

Re-viewing the series today has confirmed for me that this is: (i) the best film Thomas Newman has scored; (ii) the best music he has written for a film (covering all of his strengths); (iii) one of the best film scores of that decade that just was.

    Miller's Crossing - Carter Burwell

There isn't alot of substance to this short album but the end credits cue makes up for it (as one of the best cues/arrangements Burwell has ever done).

    NP: FIRELIGHT (Christopher Gunning)

WILLOW was far too bombastic...I had to cut it off before the last track and put on this lovely, romantic score instead.
    I am extremely serious.
  18. NP: Dawning (Nathaniel Levisay)

people who like their scores creepy, atonal and moody will feel right at home here. Stake Land was much more melodic, this one much more sinister and atonal. I appreciate it, but will not listen to it a lot. Still interesting for its moody effects, plus Levisay does bring forth some interesting ways to spell out MOOD and horror. Like the liner notes say: this is more a modern concert piece than a traditional filmscore
