I also love your favourite score of the year Alan. Very upbeat and an extremely enjoyable album. I need to check out the Documentary category, it seems I missed a lot in that segment. Well, any category contains titles I have never heard of. smile

Fine list Alan! And I'm glad I know some as well!

    Very worthy winner indeed.
You are OBVIOUSLY wrong with regards to your pick for the archival recordings, but that's OK. wink

  13. After a lot of agonising I have finally settled on a few shortlists for my blog's 2016 Reel Music 'Awards' (sorry Thor but I kept the use of the concept of awards despite your reservations).

I've come up with a whole number of categories with my 10 favourite titles for each category. If you care to have a look at which scores I have chosen then head over to my blog for the lists.

Winners announced on the 30th January, when they will win nothing at all.

He, he...that's OK. Just a pet peeve of mine.

There isn't much in terms of overlap between our choices this year, but there is maybe a handful in total.
    I am extremely serious.
  14. I didn't think that there would be much of an overlap. But, that's good as I am always looking for titles that are enthusiastically suggested that I may not either have come across or passed by with little thought.

Thanks Thor for taking a look.

  16. Alan, I love your year-end awards. I don't know how you find all of these scores, but you always come up with a bunch that I've never heard of, and I did a pretty dang good job finding things to listen to this year (281 individual scores and counting).

I really enjoyed EL JUGADOR DE AJEDREZ and BITTER HARVEST, so I was very happy to see those nominated in the drama category. My favorite drama score from last year was Rahman's VICEROY'S HOUSE.

I liked KNOCK and ALI'S WEDDING from your comedy nominations. I would give the win to ALI'S WEDDING in that category.

I was really happy to see Kantelinen's THE ADVENTURERS nominated, because I don't think that score has gotten the attention it deserves. Anyone who likes spy movie music should really like that one. KINGSMAN was really good, too. I loved hearing "Country Roads" in all it's presentations on that album.

Of your fantasy/sci-fi/horror and animation nominees, I've heard most of your nominations (I still hadn't heard of FAIRY'S GAME, HEXE LILLI, or RAW, though. My favorite in that category was THE LAST JEDI and FERDINAND was my favorite animated film score.

I had only heard two of your documentary score nominations. My favorite documentary score this year was either Curallo's RAFAELLO: IL PRINCIPE DELLE ARTI or Wallfisch's MULLY.

I haven't heard a single one of your nominees for best TV music! My favorite TV score from 2017 was ONNA JOSHU NAOTORA.

SO LET US MELT was my favorite game score from last year.

I was very happy to see CELLO nominated. It's the only one I'd heard from your short film nominees, but it's the best short film score I heard this year.

I hadn't heard any of your nominees from scores for other media. But have you heard Ilan Eshkeri's ballet NARCISSUS AND ECHO? I thought that was pretty great.

Alan, can I ask a favor of you? You've got so much music nominated here that I haven't heard, and I'd like to check it all out, but I wonder if you might give me a good place to start. I love beautiful melodic orchestral music. It's almost all I choose to listen to. Which of the scores that you've nominated would you say are the best examples of that kind of thing?

He, he...not going to re-ignite the 'award' semiotics debate. As for the picks, it seems we don't have a lot of common ground this time around. But to be fair, there's a lot of stuff on your list I haven't heard.

What we DO share is this:

    BITTER HARVEST in drama.
ATLI'S WEDDING and SAATOKEIKA in comedy.
RAW and A GHOST STORY in fantasy...
    FERDINAND (sort of) in animation
EARTH, ONE AMAZING DAY (sort of) in documentary
INVISIGUN HEROES, RIME and SO LET US MELT in game.

Then there are also some where I disagree with you.

But you have very few of my own favourites on your list. Surprised to see that VALLEY OF SHADOWS by Preisner didn't make the cut, which IMO is the very best score of the entire year.
    I am extremely serious.
  17. Just wanted to let people know that my winners of my blog's 2017 awards has been posted. Enjoy!
