I often only read the intro and last paragraph. shame

In that case you may learn more about the film rather than the music! I may have to revisit my format if you are typical of my readership!

I have just uploaded at Reel Music a review of Thierry Malet's score to the short animated film, Imago:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/09/ … rry-malet/

Malet's use of the marimba and some of his use of strings reminds me of a couple of scores from Thomas Newman.

I have added a couple of comments Malet made in an email to me that touches on his ideas for the score. And I have tweaked the content of the score to better reflect the actual instruments he used.

I have only seen clips of it so I can't say how good the film is. But from what I have seen of it the animation looks good and the music fits well.

This video features music as heard in the film.

This second video shows the animation - but the music is not the original score (I don't know where it comes from).

  4. Here's another obscure title for everyone. I have just uploaded my comments on a 20-minute suite of music from the 1959 Soviet film Ballad of A Soldier (composed by Mikhail Ziv)

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/09/ … khail-ziv/

I heartily recommend this one. You may be quicker to listen to the suite than read by 1,000+ word review!

I have uploaded some comments on Jean-Philippe Goude's score to Terence Stamp film, Tiré à Part:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/09/ … ppe-goude/

A bit of a monothematic score this one, but I like the theme and it only lasts 25 minutes so I have no complaints.

  6. I've just uploaded another review on the blog. This time it's Stefano Caprioli's score to the Serbian zombie film Zone of The Dead (aka Apocalypse of The Dead):

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/09/ … -caprioli/

A loud, grungy electric guitar library cue-sounding score that pays off sitting through it with an especially good final track that betrays the film's Balkan roots.

  7. The bit I saw was poorly acted, poorly dubbed and the music kicked in whenever there was a fight scene.

To save you the trouble in the future Tom, I will most likely not have seen any of the titles I review. The music will be reviewed in terms of its listenability.

One thing I have been meaning to ask Tom is why do you tend to use the movie poster artwork rather than the CD artwork lin your blog?

There is really no reason. I take the artwork from soundtrack collector.

  8. I have uploaded another review.

Quand Les Égyptiens Naviguaient Sur La Mer Rouge is a French TV documentary from 2009 that follows archaeologists as they build a boat to prove that the Egyptians were a seafaring people who regularly traded with lands in the Horn of Africa. The score is composed by Bernard Becker:

  9. I have just uploaded a review of Giancarlo Vulcano's Cuban-tinged score for the documentary film Unfinished Spaces:

That's cool Alan, it fits the profile of your site. smile

Would you put it on MT as well, at a later point of course? I'm sure you have let composer Vulcano (awesome name) know too?

I will post it here in a couple of weeks. No problem. Give me a shout if I forget.

I am assuming that there is only one Martijn who is likely to have commented on my review of Unfinished Spaces on my blog. I have left a reply to your comment.

  14. I have just uploaded my comments on Miguel d'Oliveira's score for the 2005 horror film The Toybox:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/ … doliveira/

By rights, this shouldn't be as good as it actually is. Atmospheric, dissonant and without much melody, it is still very listenable indeed. That's mostly down to d'Oliveira's innovative use of sound, orchestra and human voice to make the score interesting.

Nice to get a note from Miguel on my review of The Toybox:

"Many thanks Alan, Great review. It was very nice to read about it now with such a distance from the time I wrote it. Have shared it with friends and the film crew."

    Nice indeed!

I like how you get so many comments from composers and crew. I guess that's a benefit of highlighting largely less known and starting talent. And of course it's great having that in place once they hit the big time: YOU can say you were THERE when it happened! smile

  16. It is nice to get feedback. Most of the composers I have contacted do get back to me and seem really enthusiastic about the reviews - even though they may not be too glowing.

In fact, one commented that it was nice to read a review where aspects of a score that were felt not to work was mentioned as well as reading about the good stuff.

It would be nice to be remembered once they all become more well known! wink

  17. I have just uploaded a score to a book at Reel Music:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/ … n-mikhail/

Gavin Mikhail's 20-minute piano-only score to the book Between Shades of Gray. It's quite a lovely selection of 8 tracks. Sad, melodic and ultimately an uplifting listen. I enjoyed it a lot.
