Goodness! I have just uploaded another review:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/ … o-vulcano/

It's another one from Giancarlo Vulcano. My Funny Detective is a quirky noir-ish score this one, scored for a quintet of two trombones, electric guitar and bass and drums. Scored for a screenplay that was never made into a film.

    It's quite an interesting listen.

  1. I have just uploaded another review at Reel Music: this time it is Ernst W. Meinrath's score to the low budget film The Task:

  2. I've gone a bit mainstream with this next review: John Carpenter's Halloween is today's offering:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/ … carpenter/

I would welcome any comments about this one. Having people being more familiar with a score has made this one a bit more of an ordeal in the writing.

I have asked people for feedback on some previous efforts, with various degrees of success in levels of feedback - from lacklustre to the occasional comment. If people could take the time to comment (even a one-liner) that would be a great help.

    Thanks.

  3. I have uploaded another review at Reel Music:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/ … mir-boyle/

Kazimir Boyle's whimsical score for a short animated film from 2007, Flatland.

You seem to have found your niche with these lower budget movies. Good work.

Cheers, Tom. But this niche probably has only a limited number of people it will interest. Which is fine, I'm not trying to get as many people as possible on the site (but in a way I am!) - if I wanted to get a lot of traffic I would review Zimmer scores and other popular composers.

I like being able to comment on music that probably the majority of people have not even heard of. What I would like is for someone to come back someday and say that one of my reviews pointed them in the direction of a score that they really like and probably wouldn't have come across had it not been for my comments on it.

I don't have any labels sending me music and most of what I write is for scores I have purchased myself, so I don't feel pressured into writing reviews for titles like that. (I was sent Gaincarlo Vulcano's My Funny Detective - he sent this to me on the back of my review of Unfinished Spaces. Luckily it turned out to be an enjoyable score!)

Sometimes I certainly feel the same way about doing reviews of classical material from film composer's. My Sinfonietta for Strings/Herrmann is a good example.

Generic question for the site, Alan: where it says "rate this" on top of each review, what are you asking us to rate?
    The score or the review?

  5. To be honest Martijn, I am not really sure. It is just an option I activated. I would suggest you choose whichever you like most!

Thanks for the comments. I will deal with them in due course. wink

OK, then I choose to comment on the reviewer and give steady 5-star ratings. cool

  6. I am revisiting a score for the second time with my most recent upload to my Reel Music blog: read my comments to the "20th Anniversary Special Edition" release of John Carpenter's Halloween:

Although the music is mostly the same, they are two very different beasts!

Next up is another score from Thierry Malet:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/ … rry-malet/

Mont Athos: La République des Moines is a documentary filmed in Mount Athos, a peninsula jutting out into the Aegean Sea. It's a below average score but with a stunner of a theme - made up of a choir of monks singing a psalm where the tempo is speeded up (of the singing and not the recording!) and backed by the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra.

I am no musician so have no idea how easy it would be for an orchestra to accompany a choir who are singing in a free tempo.

I have no idea how complicated this is, but it would be an absolute benefit and bonus (I think) if you could somehow add some sound clips, or at least link to them. Many of the descriptions in your reviews are really tantalising and I wish I could marry them up with some of the tracks to get a full impression.

Probably not easy with the relatively rare material you generally review?

  7. I will see what I can do - I would prefer to post links rather than actual clips. As a lot of the titles are downloads then there should be samples.

I will look back at my reviews and add some links: probably set them out a bit like Thomas' "excellent track" layout.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I was thinking about this as well, after reading this particular review, because you seem very enthusiast about the theme. But that also means it's a good review, but in this particular case it's difficult to imagine the score.

  8. Does no one just go to Amazon and search title of interest? wink

I will try and add clips this weekend sometime. But I have a maintitles.net review in the pipeline too. And a Reel Music one.

  9. Been looking into linking clips to reviews. Although it says that the function is there, I can't seem to get WordPress to upload clips: when I click on the button to upload audio I can only choose images to add. I will have to work on that.

I can add links to specific track clips on Amazon and so I could do this. But, the clips are not the best clips that would show off the track. There are other online stores that offer clips...but these have embedded players and so I cannot link to specific tracks like I can with Amazon.

So, the question for those who are interested is this - would you prefer links to the specific cues or will a link to the album itself do and then you can sample any of the tracks yourself?

Strictly speaking for myself, I'd prefer links to the specific cues.
But as I can imagine this would entail quite a bit more work for you, I can imagine if you just point towards the site that hosts the clips.

  10. I have just noticed that in order to upload music clips to my blog I have to go for a space upgrade - and that will cost money. I don't really want to start paying into the blog at the moment. Maybe sometime down the line when I know the blog is something that I want to keep going long-term. But at the moment, no.

So, I will be linking tracks to Amazon cues - even though the clips themselves may not represent the parts of the track I think need listening to.

I will see if there are alternate stores that do the same as Amazon. Play.com and 7digital.com have better clips of some tracks I have listened to, but these stores only have their own embedded players and won't let me isolate out individual cues. Which is a shame.

Alan, really don't fuss too much about it.
Linking to the Amazon clips (or a MySpace site or a film site) is more than enough.

It was just a suggestion. I really didn't want to put you out. sad
'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn
  11. It's not putting me out I assure you. A lot of what I have written is really just me thinking aloud - and keeping people abreast of the issues I have come across.

Linking the music to the reviews is a good idea. Why I hadn't done it before was that I would have assumed that people would have hunted the music out themselves from the information I provide. But it this is not happening then the addition of some specific links to the music is the next best thing.

I may just add a line to the reviews with a direct link to the score and then people can sample all the tracks rather than just the tracks I highlight. I wouldn't want to cherry-pick just the best tracks and then have people complain that the samples I choose are not really representative of the score as a whole (assuming that anyone would get that far)!

Alan, I think your site is filling a niche: you're concentrating on the "off kilter", and I personally think it adds value.
Any addition you make -like linking to clips- will only serve to enhance your efforts.

I realise it may not be the most thankful of tasks, but man, it's appreciated!

  12. I've added links to some 35 reviews on my blog.

The titles that have links to audio clips tend to be the titles that are probably least familiar to people. As with physical CDs, digital releases seem to also go "out of print" so I can't find some of the scores very easily to link to (I may have to modify my statement that every title is available widely at online stores).

I have added a line to each of the 35 reviews with the link embedded and I have tagged them with the tag "audio clips". This should make it easy to find scores that have links to clips. I will continue to add these when I do reviews from now on. I probably won't add links to the better known titles though.

I've added a post to the blog summarising a few ways in which to identify the relevant titles:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/ … wn-titles/

I hope this helps people get to clips they want to hear.

With or without clips, you've got some top reviews there, Alan. It's so good to see someone reviewing less well-known titles and you've generated my interest in a number of things I wouldn't even have heard of were it not for you.
  13. Cheers, guys!
