  1. A new review:

Отряд Таганок (Otryad Taganok/Taganok Squad) - Kamil Abdullin

    https://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2021/11 … -abdullin/

A score from a 2021 Russian family adventure movie. A short album that has a couple of good main themes and paired with action scoring that reminds me of Danny Elfman and Alan Silvestri. The thematic material does a good job of reflecting the emotional development of the main group of characters over the course of the movie.

  2. A new review:

    Amalgama - Felipe Pérez Santiago

    https://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2021/12 … -santiago/

A score from a 2021 Mexican comedy-drama about a group of four dentists who sneak away from a conference to an idyllic paradise island. There the three male dentists in turn hit on the one female dentist. This short score features an excellent score from Santiago that is an a cappella score based purely around five voices (2 sopranos, an alto, tenor and bass). Inventive and refreshing, it's worth a listen.

Just a reminder that, even though I do not post here about it every week, my blog has regular updates on my "Weekly Recommendations".

These posts usually feature 2-6 scores that have caught my attention over the previous week. Probably best described as 'micro-reviews' the comments are not meant to be an in-depth analysis of the score (as would be the case for a regular review). Rather, it is an attempt at trying to highlight what I think are scores worth seeking out.

Whittled down from the 40-50 scores that I listen to over the course of the week (by trawling online stores), I hope these regular posts are useful to at least a few visitors to my blog: https://reelmusic.wordpress.com

    Interesting, thanks for sharing, Alan.

I've heard most of the titles on your list (as I set some kind of record last year, with somewhere between 1500-2000 new soundtracks sampled in some shape or form), and as I read your first category (the drama category), I thought we had unusually many favourites in common this time (BENEDETTA, BUCKLEY'S CHANCE, THE LAST DUEL, THERE IS NO EVIL), but then our preferences veered from there on out. Maybe 3-4 common throughout the rest of the categories. But that's the "charm of the game" -- as usual I like your selections of lesser known titles, with some super-famous inbetween, which is an ideology I very much share.
    I am extremely serious.
  4. Goodness! It has been a while since I posted my shortlists of favourite scores of 2021. But, I have now uploaded my winners:

Interesting winners, Alan. As usual, we see eye to eye on some, but not so much on others. I echo BENEDETTA and partially THE POTATO VENTURE, LOST IN SPACE, for example. Will need to check out that Levanto sampler. Skram's CLUE had some OK moments, but not his best effort, IMO. A lot of it sounds too synthesized, even though the Budapest Arts Orchestra is supposed to play on it.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, CLUE is not Skram's best.

  7. There's been a bit of a flurry of posts over the last few days. Trying to catch up on my Weekly Recommendations posts.

I think that this format will be the way to go for me from now on. I am not sure the long-form review is the best use of my limited time. I want to highlight scores rather than analyse them in any depth.

Hopefully some will find this format useful.

It's a good idea. I launched my own version of 'pocket reviews' a few years ago (I suppose 'capsule reviews' is a more correct term, though), but as time progressed, they became longer and really work as regular reviews now. Meanwhile, "regular reviews" are more like full-length articles. But I like the idea of a single paragraph -- challenging as it is to get the main points across. It would be very time-saving.
    I am extremely serious.
  8. I am not even sure I would class my comments as any type of analysis. They are just comments on why I recommend them. Is that an analysis of a sort?

My main goal is to draw the attention of people to 5-6 titles per week (maximum) so that they seek them out and decide for themselves.

  10. Maybe you should do a podcast Alan, and share your thoughts and highlights that way. It could be like 20 minutes segments with you talking about the gems of the week of something. I'm much more of a listener than a reader, so I'd definitely tune in!
  11. Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I am more of a writer than a talker!

    wink

I think that I have missed the boat for podcasting: listening to or creating. I rarely listen to podcasts.

What I don't want to do is to review titles in any great depth - music is so easily accessed nowadays that by the time you've listened to a podcast or read an in-depth review you could have listened to the music itself! I want to highlight titles people may have completely missed, give a sense of why I have highlighted it and then have readers hunt down the music, listen to it and have them form their own opinions on it.

Our Zoom meetings say otherwise! wink

In seriousness, I hope your capsule review project is going well and that it keeps you inspired to write.
    I am extremely serious.
  12. I enjoy doing the shorter format. I do find though that as my choices are recommendations they are all titles I like. So my output doesn't feel like a critical output. More adverts for the titles.

But that's what I want to do. Highlight what I find interesting.

I may insert some longer-format reviews every now and then.

  13. Life's been a rollercoaster since I last posted to this thread! But, I am now ready to post my nominations of my favourite scores as part of the 10th (2022) Reel Music Awards season.

I hope you enjoy the lists. I will post the winners asap.

Sorry for the late response, Alan. I've been sick with corona, stomach issues and other things for almost a month now (still not recovered).

But anyway, interesting list of nominees. I'm glad to see some titles that also scored high with me -- THE CONVERSATION, LIVE IS LIFE, PEARL....

But then obviously, also many titles that didn't really appeal to me, plus quite a few I haven't heard (or maybe I sampled them quickly in my massive walkthrough, but when nothing stood out, I moved on and forgot all about them).

Regardless (and as usual), I dig the fact that you highlight things beyond the big, mainstream titles (although you have a few of those too).
    I am extremely serious.
  14. Thanks for the comments Thor. Sorry to hear about your medical issues. I hope that you are back 100% to your old self soon.

If I remember from previous years your experience of my choices this year is pretty standard: you agree with some, you don't with a lot of others, and you haven't heard of the rest!

But, I do have some mainstream in my choices because I am not anti-mainstream. They are all choices that are particularly notable to me.

Thanks again for your comments. And, take care.

Ha, ha...yes, that's probably true. I suppose saying something is better than nothing, even if it's the same response year after year. I know how much work goes into boiling a year's listening down to nominees, so that deserves some kind of reaction. But identifying our overlapping titles is always nice and fresh, like the three I mentioned above.

  15. Yes, saying something is good. I am appreciative of your efforts. Particularly in your 'delicate' state.

What an outrageous list of winners! Absolutely a SCANDAL of GIGANTIC proportions!!

In all seriousness, love the shout-out to THE CONVERSATION. And to TROLL from Johannes; was not super-enthused with the score myself, but he's a talented, good guy who deserves the credit he can get.

I don't get all the hooplah surrounding McCreary's LOTR music, but then I haven't really listened to it that much; or boiled the insane amount of music down to a workable playlist yet.

I'll have a listen to some of your other winners (and nominations) once I get back from my holiday.
    I am extremely serious.
  17. Thanks for the comments Thor.

I saw your video on social media that you posted from your summer house. I recognised it from the "tour" you gave us during one of the zoom calls.

  18. I have (at last) posted another Weekly Recommendations post over on by Reel Music Blog:

    https://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2023/08 … m-the-sky/

I have decided to try and catch up on my recommendations from when I last posted one, so this new post is for recommendations released w/e 7th October 2022!

    Point B (Leeland Campana)
The Plague Doctor of Wippra (Titus Drissen)
    Overwhelm the Sky (Costas Dafnis)

  19. Just a holiday season reminder of my semi-regular blog posts with weekly recommended scores (that are currently being posted more frequently than weekly) .

    https://reelmusic.wordpress.com

It has been enjoyable journey trying to catch up with my recommendations. Hopefully the suggestions may alert someone to a previously unknown title.

Alan, is there any way to list JUST the 2023 FILM releases that you've highlighted at your blog? I'm currently going through as many 2023 titles as I can while preparing for my own best of, as well as the IFMCA awards, and I obviously have Jon's huge list as well as whatever I've discovered and highlighted myself over the year. But you never know, there might be gems that still aren't covered by any of that.

Your weekly updates are often about 2023 titles, but also older ones now and then. But I suppose I could just walk through those manually.

By the way, the same question goes to you, Joep, if you're reading. Any way to list all your reviews of 2023 titles? I find that clicking "reviews" here doesn't give the best overview of that.
    I am extremely serious.

Nevermind, Alan, I'm working my way through your blog post manually, so no need to list.

By the way, how I missed RIVER ROAD in 2022 is beyond belief! What an excellent score up my alley. Shame it's not eligible for either the IFMCA awards or my own list.
