    What Tom and Tim said.
Google's too late to the party, without any clear business model to their Facebook Lite.

I *really* have no need for another virtual social network. But thanks for the offer, D.
I know many people are gagging for an invite.

I'm on it. It's better-designed and well thought-out than Facebook but given how much time and effort most people have invested in Facebook I can't imagine it will build that much of a presence. I'm on it and like it but haven't really used it yet. Do I want to bother uploading photos etc to somewhere else as well?

On it too. Mostly because I like Google and just about any product they produce. I don't think it will become a chaos of applications and crap like facebook is, because that's not how Google seem to conduct themselves in my impression. But other than that it seems very similar to facebook, so unless they will incorporate more fancy features I doubt it will become a serious competitor anytime soon.

I think you only need a Google registration, not an actual gmail account (I don't have a gmail account).

With Google changing its privacy policy later next month, bringing all their websites under one 'session', I'm now using Duck Duck Go as search engine since a few weeks. This engine doesn't do track users, doesn't leak your search term to the site you visit, doesn't log data, and doesn't do filter bubbles (filter search results according to your history of search) and runs over https. It was created not so long ago as a reaction to all the scary efforts for tracking other search engines are pushing.
    https://duckduckgo.com/privacy.html

It's not Google in terms of scope, but I'm really happy with it in terms of finding what I'm looking for.

Other options to get you ready is installing the following add-ons for Firefox

    - Cookie Monster: set the default setting to "reject all cookies" and enable on sites you want
    - BetterPrivacy: for deleting LSO cookies (sort of long term Flash objects that can track over several sites)
    - Ghostery: blocks third party cookie stuff and things like Facebook Social Plugins, Google Analytics, and other stuff that can track your surf behaviour over several sites
    Kazoo
  1. Didn't I read somewhere that you can delete history now and switch off tracking in the preferences? Or am I misunderstanding things.

Btw, anyone know what's going on here? If I write in the URL box "www.avast.com" the page "google.dk" opens. If I write "www.free.avg.com" it goes directly to "google.dk". I just want to download a free antivirus program. And if I try to download Avast from download.cnet.com, I get a Google 404 error. It feels a bit like Skynet (<-Terminator reference) is taking over.

    Shit!

Any ideas what to do? I've managed to get AVG installed, but it's an outdated version and when I try to update it it complains.

  3. At this point potentially only a format can do...

Thanks! It seems in Internet Explorer I can access the Avast and AVG websites.

In the meantime my (outdated) AVG scan is finding an infection called "Win32/NSArti".

I'll try some way to remove it.

What does anyone think of this suggestion in how to remove the "infection"?

    Thanks Alan.

Yes, I tried that a little while ago and it said it couldn't find amvo.exe.

Think I'll let AVG finish the scan. I'm sure it can remove the virus since it has found it.

Strangely the problems seems to have arisen after I got a request to update DivX, which just affirms my belief never to update ANYTHING that's working, no matter how much your computer is pestering you to update. I'll never update anything again... except for perhaps antivirus updates and Windows updates. The rest can go fudge themselves. They always claim that you're more prone to infection if you don't update, but in my experience, updating stuff is always what ultimately destroys your computer.

  4. I think I saw when I googled your problem that there were some "hits" that suggested that AVG could not remove amvo.exe.

Maybe you have to manually find the file(s) and delete them? If it is a suspicious file then maybe it can hide itself from any anti-virus scan. Or you may have to do a scan in safe mode?

Perhaps you can scan with Spybot Search and Destroy too, and immunize your browser.

  5. But make sure it is the legit Spybot and not a rogue version. I am on my phone so can't add a link easily at the moment.

    Thanks guys. I'll try Spybot.

I've managed to temporarily solve it, as I managed to install Avast, and when that's running I can go into avast.com and other antivirus websites without problems. The virus is not removed though, because as soon as I tried uninstalling Avast, the problem came back. So I've had to install it again. I'll try various programs to see if one of them can fix it. I've heard that it's probably called DNS hijack malware, whatever that means.

Alan, perhaps it was off. I believe I've set it to automatic updating now.
