That's a fine album, very jazzy. I really must get this on CD sooner rather than later.

NP : LYLE MAYS - Lyle Mays

Self titled first album from Pat Metheny Group pianist / co-composer, superb playing and very melodic, I love 'The Alaskan Suite' which is incredibly evocative of wintery landscapes and Aurora Borealis.

    I recommend.

  1. When I see Aurora Borealis I can't stop thinking of the fantastic piece from Oldfield's Music from the Spheres!

Aye, that is a lovely piece eh Pawel.

I'm thinking there must be a lot of music out there inspired by the Auroras but the only one that comes to mind beside the two mentioned above is a piece from Vaughan Williams 'Scott of The Antarctic' on the Chandos re-recording of the film score.

You really should. My dad's a massive fan of Steely Dan and in 2007, when they last toured the UK, I was going to buy myself and him tickets to see them in Birmingham but couldn't afford it at the time. My biggest regret - not least because Steely Dan was one of my father's most played bands when I was growing up, and one of the most influential on my taste in popular music.

The title track, almost an eight minute buster, always reminds me of arriving in Melbourne after a red-eye flight from Perth because it was the first track I put on my iPod when I boarded the shuttle bus from the airport into the city at dawn.

It's one of the most fascinating things, that music can have such a potent influence on your memory - that a particular piece will take you back to a most specific time in your life. It's like the sense of smell. Incredible.

    cool

NP: SOLID AIR - JOHN MARTYN

One of Tim's many recommendations. A fabulously chilled out album that almost seems to physically pass you that dusty bottle of brandy sitting on that shelf across the room. Superb.

    NP : SYMPHONY # 11 - Dmitri Shostakovitch

This version is by Mstislav Rostropovitch and the LSO.

A vast and bleak soundscape that is very atmospheric but when it kicks off, boy, DOES IT KICK OFF! In film music only Jerry Goldsmith at his most violent and very best could even hope to come anywhere near to matching the ferocity in this work.

    AWESOME!

Brahms Symphony No. 1. This is a work that became a template for a lot of other works. An outstanding effort for a first symphony.

I've finally settled on my next review which is "American Mystic" music of Alan Hovhaness. As I go through this 20 track compilation I'm sure that if you're new to his music this is an outstanding compilation of his material as it includes a great selection of his material.

It's bloody great! I hadn't intended to play it but next door was ruining my listening pleasure with some DIY so that album played LOUD AS FOOK! was a great antidote biggrin
