  1. A London Symphony Vaughan Williams

I've been listening to a lot of Vaughan Williams in the last week, triggered by the terrific new ''Scott of the Antarctic" release. I've always liked this second Symphony and have the Sir Adrian Boult recording from 1971. But I just noticed that Chandos have a recording available of the 1913 original version which ran over 20mins longer, has anyone here heard it? Does it add or detract to the piece? I know Vaughan Williams himself saw the revised 1933 version as the definitive one but composers aren't always the most objective when viewing their own work.

It's brilliant John and the recording is sublime. A must have IMO.

John I too am considering the purchase of the new recording. Scott is one of my favorite pieces of Williams. Like you I spend far too much money and I'm a reviewer of Naxos so I get at least 13 free every month

Just finished listening to Metropolis by Micheal Daugherty. This is part of the anniversary box of 30 CD's from Naxos. I've seen this 30 CD set for $35.00. Can't tell you a whole lot about it because I'm on CD7 but I enjoyed the heck out of Rodeo from Copland. Metropolis is of course about Superman.

Another interesting score is the Russian version of Hamlet (1964) which I'm listening to now. A completely different side of Shostakovich. It still has the edge but with a melody.

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Verdi's requiem live in concert. I was seated only a few yards away from the kettle-drum, which was resoundingly powerful. The only recording I've heard that could touch the energy of that performance is this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDFFHaz9GsY) by the Russian State Symphony Orchestra.

There's some way better recordings, but they don't have that powerful Russian ferocity.

Listening to it today, it's not even especially dissonant. I chuckle at the idea of the "riot" when it was performed.

But now I'm imagining a concert today where someone just played a loud, obnoxious siren for 2 hours. I bet people would yell and throw stuff and run away too. Is that what we'll be listening to in a hundred years?
