    Rachmaninov's second Piano Concerto

A perfect piece of music. Not near perfection, not the closest thing to perfection - but actual perfection.

There is no one who writes like him for piano, a true master.

NP: FIRE, WATER, PAPER - A VIETNAM ORATORIO (Elliot Goldenthal)

Massive concert work, with some harsh atonalities alongside extremely ethereal segments. Must be in the mood, but if you are it's really rewarding.
    I am extremely serious.

    NP: IDENTITY (Zee)

Zee was a shortlived band in the 80's which only released this single LP -- a weird mix of acid jazz, electropop and whatnot. I got it because Richard Wright from Pink Floyd is in it, but it really doesn't sound remotely like Pink Floyd.
    I am extremely serious.

A great work, orchestrations by Maurice Ravel, what's not to like.

This symphony is somewhat out of place with his other symphonies. A Dangerous Method has some horn motifs that are quite Bruckner sounding.

I've become quite fond of the piano version which is how it was written by Moussorgsky.

It is good but I never play it, I just have to play the orchestrated version.

    Which two?

  2. Fifth and seventh.

  3. It was James Horner who got me to properly listen to the fifth (ripped the Largo off in both Jack Ryan scores and the final part was an inspiration for his Achilles theme in Troy). Horner in general likes his Shostakovich. And Prokofiev.

Yes he does and hasn't he proved it over and over again wink ( not that I think that's a bad thing )

    5th and 7th are fantastic.

I think you should try his 11th next chance you get, it's a favourite of mine, bleak and vast but with outbursts of incredible violence, it's stunning.

Great early prog rock/blues/rockabilly album. But I've never been sure if the boobs on the cover are from a man or woman. I hope for his or her sake it's a she.
