    Erm....why?

Interesting, for me it's a "best-of" act, not a band that I have individual albums from.

There is sooo much more to them than 'hit singles', you're missing an awful lot of excellent music.

I thought they were too soapy for you. Anyway, I do own one individual album, "Balance of Power", which I owned on LP back in the days and have an nostalgic connection to. My best-of is a 2 CD set, so it's pretty comprehensive, but I'll investigate on Spotify.

    Innit just? love
I love the Moroccan uprising concept (although it always mystified me that this comprised just 70 % of the album....the rest, however good, always seemed like filler!

  6. Just played Fantasy Overture to Romeo and Juliet - Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

I just saw this year's New Year's Eve concert of Staatskapelle Dresden conducted my Christian Thielemann. Among other works they performed Tchaikovsky's mentioned work. It's a favourite of mine. Breathtaking!

NP: SIMPLE THINGS - Zero 7

I fucking love this album - it means a lot to me for several reasons - but I try to listen to it as little as possible and save it for special moments.

This is one of those moments.

NP: SYMPHONY NO. 4 (Dimitri Shostakovich)

Very modern. Haven't really played this much since it was given to me a few years ago. It's the Eugene Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra recording on Sony Classical.
    I am extremely serious.
  7. NP: Incense & Peppermints (1968) - Strawberry Alarm Clock

  10. NP: RABBIT AND ROGUE - Danny Elfman

This is just great. I'm so glad this finally got released!
  11. Romeo and Julet Suites 1-3 Prokofiev

I love listening to these three suites in one go, a great way to listen to the main parts of the ballet in 1hr 20mins rather than 2hr 20mins if you don't have the time.
  12. NP: The Album (1977) - ABBA

Love this. '77 has been a terrific year in music.

John Hurt alongside John Gielgud. Just brilliant.

  14. One Moment In Time (1988)

John Williams, Whitney Huston and various other artists. This is not an official Olympics album, yet if features the official song of the 88 Seoul summer games as well as the NBC TV Theme by John Williams.
This is actually a quite nice 80s album.

Williams' "Olympic Spirit" is not only my favourite Olympic theme of his, but probably also my alltime favourite JW 'short' concert piece. Either that or "Celebrate Discovery". I remember those games as well, including the songs -- especially "Hand in Hand".

  15. Now that you mention it the Moroder song "Hand in Hand" was the official one not "One Moment in Time". The former is not on this album. Oh, and I prefer "Olympic Fanfare" (Los Angeles 1984), the stand alone version without the Leo Arnaud piece.

  16. And now for some straight glam rock.

Love Sweet. Amongst the very first singles ( 45 rpm vinyl records wink ) I bought before I was a teenager.

Two Concerti Howard Shore (Feat. Lang Lang & Sophie Shao)

Incredible. I've finished the first one so far, and you'd be forgiven for thinking you were listening to a piano concerto straight out of the Romantic period. This isn't, what Martijn dislikes, a composer trying to be interesting; this is a composer showing off.

Don't expect this to sound like film music. It's firmly in the classical arena.

On the topic of comparison to his film music, those of you that enjoy the Neo-Baroque stylings of Icarus from The Aviator will find much to enjoy on this album.

    Two Concerti - Howard Shore

I've only heard the piano concerto so far but I'm not finding the thematic material very striking, surprising from this composer. It's stylistically difficult to pin down, at times Romantic, other times Neo-Baroque. I'll need to give it more listens.
