  1. So the Home Nations are in New Zealand preparing to take part in the Rugby World Cup. Twenty teams* compete for the Webb Ellis Cup, with the final to be played on the 23rd October.

Anyone else going to be following it?

Unfortunately, for me, New Zealand as a venue is slightly inconvenient. Looking at the schedule, Scotland's matches kick-off at times like 2:00am and 8:30am. And most of the games start about breakfast time. But luckily, not having to go to work I can plan my day's writing around the matches.

I think that Scotland have managed to get to the Quarter-Finals the last few tournaments and with our football team having been dumped out of the European football competition recently I am hoping for big things from the rugby team.

    *Teams:

Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Georgia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Namibia, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Tonga, USA, Wales.

Guess what Alan and you can guess
    listen to more classical music!
  2. From the lacklustre response so far I would say that no-one has any real interest in this worldwide tournament. And I would say that, in the US, there must be practically no coverage at all?

  3. At the moment I am trying to figure out how to be around for the 2:30am kick-off of Scotland's first match later. Do I try and stay awake for it or do I get some sleep earlier in the evening and then get up for the match.

I may elect to try and stay awake until the match starts. I used to do the same for live broadcasts of baseball and American Football games when they used to air on free-to-watch TV.

You're correct as the NFL had their first game last night.

  4. It is 3:00am at the moment and I am watching the Scotland v Romania. As is the lot of being a Scotland sport supporter it is not plain sailing.

  5. Well, even by Scottish standards! If the team are going to do this to me every time they play then I may not watch any more games!

I saw the last half of England v Argentina this morning, we won but it was a poor standard, some VERY fruity language could be heard near the end of the game which the broadcasters apologised for.

When played well RUGBY is like american Football except that it's exciting and doesn't need namby-pamby body armour.

Our overpaid spoilt brat football stars could learn a lot from the Rugby stars ( they won't ), not least of all that a tickle on the ear doesn't send a man to the ground writhing in agonising death throes.

Footballers, Pah! I wouldn't waste spitting on the lot of em!

Never really been that interesting sport to me. I prefer more elegance and technique over brute force. This just seems like a dirtier version of American football to me. There is zero coverage on Norwegian tv, but if I remember correctly, I saw a match in France once. Obviously never made an impact.
    I am extremely serious.

  7. I caught highlights of the Ireland-USA game here over the weekend (they only seem to be showing tape-delayed USA games on non-pay channels). Ireland were lucky.

What's all this I'm reading about a suspension from the England-Argentina game?

And, yes, Tom is still going on about the NFL, despite him having his own topic for that, and this not being it wink
  8. Hmmm... isn't about time someone mentioned Christopher Gordon's superb RUGBY WORLD CUP music? (Albeit from the last decade.) punk
