When MovieScore Media released Conrad Pope's score for In My Sleep last year, the album was met with great enthusiasm. Ain’t It Cool’s Scorekeeper enthusiastically claimed that ”Pope is an extremely talented composer… … (his) gifts as an orchestrator I'm sure are indispensable to the composers who hire him; however, I would really love to see him orchestrate less and compose more.” Ain't That So!

We are happy to announce our second project together with Conrad, releasing his stylish orchestral score for the independent horror feature The Presence, starring Mira Sorvino, on our Screamworks label. The music is very elegant but dark, ominous but beautiful, and it's clear that Conrad Pope has much composition in him despite the fact that he's best known for his orchestration work on some minor movies as the Star Wars, Harry Potter and Matrix series. Our release of The Presence score album co-incides with Lionsgate's US DVD release of the film.

  2. Mikael, what's that unusual noise that seems to be underneath the flute in tracks such as "Mr. Browman Arrives"? Sometimes the flutes seem to be just a straight flute but there also seems to be some instances where there's an additional sound.

It could be some weird blowing technique or some additional instrumentation (unusual string playing?), I am not sure.

Alan, it's flutes. Blowing abruptly and rough and with their mouth more sideways (greater angle) than usual so that a large amount of the air 'bounces off' the slit of the flute rather than going all in the hole, and thus creating that whistling effect.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

  4. I am enjoying it too, particularly the parts that feature prominent woodwinds. As I mentioned elsewhere, the use of the bassoon here reminds me of Murray Gold's use of the same instrument in Doctor Who: "Blink (Suite)" and there's a definite reminder of James Newton Howard's score for Signs.

I can hear the similarity to Signs also. Boy is that a score I've not listened to in awhile. One of the better efforts from JNH

    Wow! That's some praise!
This would have gone completely under my radar as horror scores very rarely appeal to me.
Now it seems this may even be a "must-buy"?

    Excellent review, Tom.

I do think that it is a very good score from Pope. His interesting use of orchestrations makes it particularly interesting and it is this that makes it stand out for me. I was surprised when I saw a rating of 4.5. My own opinion is that that is a bit high but, as we know, rating systems are very difficult to interpret. And Tom articulates well his reasoning for giving it such a high score.

That is all details though. Tom's review highlights that this is a very good release from Mikael/Screamworks and is another indication of Conrad Pope's talents as a composer as well as an orchestrator.

Screw ratings indeed; very hard and unfair system. What's written in a review is what matters.

I do think that ratings have their place in a review system. But they should be taken into consideration side-by-side with a written review. I think, for me, the star-rating is a one word summary of the music and how impacts on the reviewer. But within that single score there can be a range of scores that have different qualities. Therefore, it is unfair to compare a 3-star score with another 3-star score because they may not be the same. It is the review that details why a score gets the star-rating assignment - and it should help to decide even whether one 3-star score is more appealing than another 3-star score.

I gave it a rating because MT has a ***** system. I don't use that system on my Film Music: A Neglected Art. There are no star systems. I gave it the rating I did based on other horror scores and this was one of the very best. I use Psycho as the very best effort. But I know that all of you have seen through all of that and took the time to read the review and felt my enthusiasm about the material. Hopefully many of you will order this one and support MSM. He is a valuable asset to our soundtrack community. I've neglected his material and am going to make every effort to correct that situation.

I give stars, though I'm not a reviewer, but just to keep track of what's great, good or not so good.

    From * to *****:

*** is simply mediocre, where the music does not raise an eyebrow, nor does it flat out annoy me. It's just background filler stuff, not good and not awful.

Everything that is either better or worse than that line of thought, gets the rating I think it deserves. So a 4 star score can entertain me on the whole, though it may not be all good but has a couple of great cues, and a 2 star score is where the music grates, and I'm glad the album is over. 5 is impeccable, absolutely mindblowing and 1 star is totally not worth my time.

I base my rating on how much an album or score entertains me... or doesn't.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  10. A rating system for review tells you nothing about how good the film/score actually is, nor does it tell you anything about how the reader of any review should feel about the film/score. All it does is tell you how much the reviewer enjoyed the experience - and with a bit of luck the review will explain to some extent why the reviewer gave the rating he did.

I suppose taken together, a lot of reviewers' comments goes some way to setting an argument that a film/score becomes a classic? If 9 of 10 reviewers say it is a 5-star film/score then, chances are, it is of good quality that most people would agree on.

Writer/director of the movie here, Tom Provost. I am glad so many of you are enjoying Conrad's wonderful music. I am biased, of course! Thomas Kiefner, thanks for the great review, I hope Conrad continues to get a chance to write as opposed to orchestrate (which he does brilliantly). I look forward to hearing what people continue to think about his music. Thanks!
