    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SCREAMWORKS RECORDS TO RELEASE ’THE AWAKENING’ SOUNDTRACK
CD features orchestral score by Ivor Novello Award-winning composer Daniel Pemeberton

(October 20, 2011- Göteborg, Sweden) – The only record label in the world devoted exclusively to music from horror films, Screamworks Records, will release Ivor Novello Award-winning composer Daniel Pemberton’s orchestral score from the British supernatural thriller The Awakening, starring Rebecca Hall (The Prestige, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Town), Dominic West (300, Chicago, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace) and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake, Much Ado About Nothing, Chicken Run).

Screamworks Records CD release of the score is due out on November 8, 2011, co-inciding with the theatrical UK premiere of the film on November 11. The digital release of the album is handled by 1812 Recordings.

Nick Murphy’s supernatural thriller recently created a lot of buzz during the Toronto Film Festival where Studiocanal sold the US distribution rights to Cohen Media Group for “a seven-figure sum” according to Variety. Set in post-World War I England in 1921, The Awakening follows a skeptical woman who travels to a countryside boarding school to investigate rumours of an apparent haunting. Just when she thinks she has debunked the ghost theory, she has a chilling spectral encounter which defies all her rational beliefs. The stylish film features spectuacular visuals beautifully underlined by a large, gothic orchestral score composed by Daniel Pemberton. Dark orchestral sonorities, haunting vocals and elements of operatic choir writing form the backbone of this elegant and engaging score, which was beautifully recorded at Abbey Road in London. Particularly memorable is “The Awakening Theme” which is used throughout the score, an instantly memorable arpeggio motif that has the same effective ‘hook’ as many of the most famous horror scores in the history of film music.

Daniel Pemberton is the Ivor Novello Award winning and BAFTA nominated composer behind many of the themes and sounds heard everyday on TV. His credits include everything from cult comedy series (Peep Show, Suburban Shootout) to mainstream reality shows (Hells Kitchen, Love Island, Bad Lads Army); acclaimed dramas such as Desperate Romantics (which earned Pemberton his Ivor Novello Award), Born With Two Mothers and the Vincent Van Gogh biopic The Yellow House to BAFTA and Emmy Award winning documentaries (Hirsohima , George Orwell - A Life In Pictures), top rated lifestyle programmes (Great British Menu) to big budget family adventures (Prehistoric Park). His ability to jump genres effortlessly yet still bring a unique and recognizable sound to every project saw him named as 'one of the hottest people working in television today' by Broadcast magazine, who praised him as 'a composer prepared to take risks'. Pemberton has become one of the most in demand and prolific composers in British television, writing music for over 150 different TV productions amounting to more than 500 shows in total in the past decade. These have featured everything from a 70 piece orchestra to kazoos and a drum machine; big band jazz set ups to intricate electronic sound design; French folk bands to Armenian flautists. Well known for his creative and incredibly versatile approach to writing no two scores ever sound the same. The Awakening is his first major British feature film.

According to its new policy, Screamworks Records will denote the number of the manufactured edition on The Awakening CD. The first edition of The Awakening is limited to 1000 copies.

Screamworks Records (http://www.screamworksrecords.com) is a sub-label to MovieScore Media (http://www.moviescoremedia.com) which has been nominated for the International Film Music Critics Association ’Soundtrack Label of the Year’ award five yearsin a row and has released original music from over 150 films on CD and digitally online. It is distributed in the UK by RSK Entertainment and in the USA by Screen Archives Entertainment.

    Streitenfeld finally been found out?
  1. One can only hope. This is very good news for Pemberton - I really like his scores for Best, Attila the Hun, and Prisoners Wives.
  2. I have heard the latter two and the one highlighted above (amongst others) and I always look forward to a new Pemberton score.

I don't have problems with either of them. Prometheus or The Grey were great.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

  6. I strongly recommend his STEVE JOBS score. Outstanding, a real medley of musical genres not trying to hide behind the constant stream of words.

Haven't seen the film yet, but the soundtrack album was one of my favourites from last year.

  7. I really liked MAN FROM UNCLE and COUNSELLOR as well. Pemberton's going well from my POV.

I agree. Very enjoyable and strong scores. MAN FROM UNCLE is superb in the movie. The Unfinished Kiss was not used though! What a fabulous piece.

  8. Counsellor didn't do much for me, but I have been enjoying his two from this year. Very creative and eclectic in his choices, Pemberton.

Agreed. THE COUNSELOR didn't do much for me, neither film nor score. But the combo of STEVE JOBS and MAN FROM UNCLE is absolutely stunning. I saw Pemberton in Ghent last year, and I regret not talking to him more fully (he's my age). I'm terrible at mingling. Plus, I was too focussed on Silvestri anyway.
    I am extremely serious.

Very nice review. I love the score a lot more than I expected given that I wanted Trever Jones to return. Daniel and Samuel have created something new and amazing, and that main theme is indeed a spectacle. I love how it's represented at every other turn of the score, offered in many variants and styles. I doubt, however, that it's going to get the enormous recognition of the original. It's a bit too complex for that, which, in the end, makes it even more interesting. I also love the rest of the score, its many turns, the fantastic appearances of the original theme, the sound, the length, everything.
  12. I haven't heard the score yet, but have a friend who worked on the animatronics in the film, so even though it's not my kind of movie, I might just have see it (hear it) anyway! smile

So, not many people are going to like the lack of "complex thematic architecture" and the focus on tone. The movie itself looks intriguing.

Perhaps not, but those who like the particular SOUNDS of old analogue synths should enjoy it. The film leaves something to be desired, but is recommended for a breezy Sunday viewing.

  14. Pemberton is so thoughtful and makes such artful choices but sometimes I just miss the emotion and theme material. Without those, it isn't really the film music I've come to love. He's hugely talented, but I think sometimes just too intellectual for me.
