I just wanted to stop by and share the trailer for this film, which premieres in Norway this Friday, which I composed the orchestral score for. The work is chamber orchestral, featuring 21 musicians. I think its my best film work to date, though I feel the selection featured in the trailer is more reflective of the score's weaker moments!
I've been told the music might be reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann, Arvo Part, the Danish film composer Bent Fabricius-Bjerre, and (in my own opinion) Bela Bartok and Jerry Goldsmith.
I'll be sure to notify if any abroad screenings are arranged after it's initial run in Norway :-) -

Is it this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEvOE-5w38A
Sounds mostly Herrmanny to me judging by the trailer. I do detect a scandinavian vibe though.

Cool!
I must admit that I hadn't heard of this film before,, but I see that it was shown on BIFF. Does it have wide distribution here?
Anyways, congrats! You caught me on the Bjerre mention, a favourite of mine that you don't often see referenced. I'll surely pay extra attention to the music when I see it.I am extremely serious. -

Side note; my English gf is a fan of Bjerre. She adores alot of the Bjerre themes I've introduced her to.

markrayen, is this your first film score?
Btw, for a man to be "hung", is often slang for having a big penis in English. I wonder if "The hung man" might sound naughty to alot of native English speakers. Though I'm not sure I can think of a better translation.

A well-hung man - definitely!!
"The Hanged Man" rather than "The Hung Man" may be better? The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Hehe... didn't put much thought into the translation, but the official English title is "Hangman". I chose not to use it because Stephan, the director, apparantly didn't like it. :-P -

Thanks for the interest. Actually, its my second for a feature film. The first one was in 2008 (Bak Fasaden). The director of that film also directed "Hangman" and is a huge admirer of film music. He always pushes me to do my best and when he likes the result, I see him light up and get excited in a way that makes all my struggles worthwhile. Its so nice to be part of a team where people really believe in you and in such a context anything becomes possible! I owe a lot to him, and I'm sure his will be a significant voice in Scandinavian film in the years to come :-) -

Its not a major film. Its produced with support from among others "Sørnorsk filmsenter" and "Cultiva". The initial cinematic run is limited to Kristiansand and Arendal, but it is currently being offered to cinemas nationwide and if it does well here (fingers crosed!) we might just get distribution nationwide. But the big question is whether or not we'll be programmed in Oslo. The competition is very solid this year with more than 40 Norwegian films premiering I've been told.
Thor, I'll have to send you a soundtrack copy. The recording technique isn't up to super-Hollywood standards but with a limited budget and improvised surroundings I think we did alright. The music is also under-rehearsed but with the aid of pro-tools me and the music supervisor were able to conceal if not erase most of the mistakes... -

Cool, thanks! I'd be delighted to hear your work.
My hope is that we can soon do "Composer of the Month" entries on Norwegian composers at montages.no as well -- so maybe we'll do one on you eventually?I am extremely serious. -

Well, perhaps if you put emphasis on the "eventually"
The great thing is that we, in spite of financial challenges and a small staff of employees, were able to put together a symphonic score. The logistical challenge was daunting, f ex; the director, producer, and music supervisor/pianist showed up themselves to help transport the huge timpani boxes into a rented truck... I had to photograph them rolling the boxes out of the building, it was such a surreal moment...

By the way Thor, the reference to Bjerre was based on a particular scene where a couple of violins play tremolo on a harmonic. So it is perhaps a bit random. Apparantly this was a string special effect Bjerre employed frequently... -

Thanks Tom! I will look into possibilites eventually. For now though, the premiere has taken place. The audience reception was overwhelming, the actors were thrilled to see it for the first time, the speeches were very very touching, and not least: the paper reviews were very positive. I brought the singer who performed the song in the end credits to the screening, and it was a delight to see how nervous she was as her voice filled the room as the credits rolled after the climactic ending of the film... so nice to be able to share an experience like that with a colleague :-) -

Very kind of you, Peter
The translated titles are spot on, I think. The only thing is that tracks 6 and 13 don't translate well into English without some rephrasings. So I would suggest something like:
track 6 → "that's a promise"
track 13 → "Karl on the road"
Alan, thank you for the interest and not least for the investment! Greatly appreciate it! -

Thanks Peter & Mark.
I have listened to this now a couple of times and I think that it's very good. If I might say that, yes, the limited resources for the recording do show through sometimes but the music itself is what's important and this is a great little listen.

Thanks again, Alan
The liner notes I wrote for the booklet (in Norwegian) pretty much reflect a similar point of view. I wrote, that first and foremost this release is an acknowledgement for everyone involved on the film. It was a small film, and an even smaller budget, so I think we all prefer to be modest about it. But, obviously since this is a first for me, I'm thrilled to have my music properly licensed and commercially distributed.
Oh, and I actually wrote the lyrics (and played piano) for that last song. Another first! -

Bregt! Thanks so much for the support! I don't know about payment options, and I don't really have knowledge of what stores have it available. Neither play.com, amazon, or musiconline.no seem to offer a PayPal option. I'll have to get back to you on this...
