I'm jealous!
As you should be!
Still trying to find out what I want to do once the film music weekend is over. I still have a week and a half left. I think both Yosemite and Grand Canyon are too far off (and I would also need to pack for hiking, which means double the amount of clothes and shoes and stuff), but I think I've boiled it down to three cities -- San Francisco, Las Vegas and San Diego. One of those.
Unlike James, I was quite stupid and ordered return tickets from LA, rather than another town, which means that I must return from wherever I want to go. Would have been smarter and less stressful to have a return ticket from the NEW place you're going to. Oh well...I am extremely serious. -

I would recommend San Francisco out of those 3 you mentioned. We spent 10 days there and loved every minute of it.
We had no car so spent the time walking around the various parts of the city, took boat trips out to Alcatraz, Sausalito/Angel Island, had a walk around Muir Woods to see the giant redwoods and went out to Sea World in Valejo.
A great city and surroundings to explore. And lots of recognisable places from the movies. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Sounds excellent, Alan! I'm an anti-car person, which makes it a bit difficult to travel in a very car-oriented society, but if you managed, I can manage.I am extremely serious. -

Our plans beside LA is not clear yet. I have been in California many times so have seen a lot already. This year maybe for one of my travel buddies it is new area, so we try to visit Las Vegas, San Francisco by car after our gathering weekend in LA.That's the beauty of music. They can't take that away from you. (Andy Dufresne) -

San Framcisco seems to be very walking friendly and most places there seems to be popular with people on foot. Walking out to places out by the Presidio, Fort Mason and out to Ocean Beach(?) are all great walks. And don't forget a trip on the trams, and watching the night views from the "Top of the Mark" having a beer or cocktail... I could go on.
The only time I felt uncomfortable was when we walked south of Market Street. A few street beggar types but that was all.
There is also a range of hotels to choose from. We were in the Chancellor just by Union Square - nice and central. But there's plenty of no-frills places down by Fisherman's Wharf too.
Food is good and varied. Good seafood. And if you do go I recommend Lori's Diner. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

And of course, now James posted his highly ambitious itinerary at facebook (re-post it here, James!), and feel I have to step mine a bit as well too. Make it a roundtrip of sorts....without car.I am extremely serious. -

Your wish is my command!
Plan is: fly to LA, see John Williams at the Hollywood Bowl, go to theme parks, drive up to Yosemite for a couple of days, on to San Francisco for a couple more, then further north into the wine country, then make our way to Las Vegas for three days at the end.
What I didn't say on Facebook: if it were just me then obviously I'd hope to spend a lot more time with you and all the other guys I know from these boards, but I don't think Kerry would like it much. In particular that "Friends of FSM" or whatever it's called, I'd probably go, and the David Newman concert, but with Kerry I don't think it's really fair. Hopefully a couple of dinners while we're all in LA, though. -

@Southhall try not to plan anything the friday morning yet. If you would like you can see John's rehearsal at the Bowl. About 6 weeks prior the concert I will contact the organisation if the rehearsal like other years is open to the public. That's the beauty of music. They can't take that away from you. I don't blame her. I wouldn't be stuck with a bunch of film score nerds either when you've travelled half around the globe -- to one of the most exciting areas there is!
But the sequence of places seems a bit odd. Isn't it better to take SF before Yosemite, and then further on to Vegas from there? From a purely geographical point-of-view (especially with a car?). I'm currently looking into flying to SF, stay for a couple of days, then fly to Fresno and take train/bus to Yosemite from there (a couple of days), then head back to Fresno, fly to Las Vegas, stay for a couple of days and then fly or take a luxury shuttle bus back to LA on 9/11, and then back to Norway the next day.
I will not have time to see the wine districts, and I also think I have to cut out ONE of the components above in addition to that (probably Yosemite has to go). But your itinerary really provoked me into a more elaborate plan myself! I want to have a jampacked holiday, but at the same time get the vibe of the place I'm visiting.
LA will be explored in the days PRIOR to the film music weekend (and during, of course).I am extremely serious. -

My mouth is watering with all these posts....Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas.....could be so great. Have to start thinking about it, but I'd certainly love to go to the JW concert and expand the trip to some of these locations.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

I'm a sucker for neon lights!
Wouldn't want to spend more than a couple of days there, though. It's not like I have any money to burn on casinos etc.I am extremely serious. -

Las Vegas has some nice outdoor and indoor shows. I have been to Las Vegas 4 times now and did not spend any money in the casino's except the hotel room.
We went to Blue Man Group in Venetian, last year. That was nice to see. But you can also choose one of the Cirque Du Soleil shows.
Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon (you can take a helicopter tours from Las Vegas to the canyon, not cheap)That's the beauty of music. They can't take that away from you. (Andy Dufresne) -

The Grand Canyon would be a sight to see. But you could be based somewhere other than Las Vegas? The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

The first thing I thought when I saw the Grand Canyon with my own eyes was 'oh, just like on the TV' and then the magnitude sets in with it's inability to truly take it all in. I would consider it a seriously wasted opportunity to go to Vegas and not see the Grand Canyon. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -
- CommentTimeMar 24th 2012
Off course you could skip Las Vegas and go directly to Grand Canyon. South rim is more visited I think, but personally I liked the views from the North Rim more. In 2000 I did a helicopter flight from Grand Canyon Villiage. During the trip they played John William's track Journey to the Island form Jurasic Park. That was great! That's the beauty of music. There is no public transportation from Vegas to Grand Canyon, as far as I can see, and the car trip takes about five hours. So it's not like it's 'just around the corner'.I am extremely serious. -

Please let me know what you'll decide upon, Marselus. I would really like to share a rental car with someone (both for economy and for minimizing my own driving), especially in LA. I will never rent a car on my own.I am extremely serious. -

And if you are there, listen out for the music by composers from the Alan Ett Music Group. It is worth hearing:

Oh dear. Still jealous. I exchanged this for a trip to Iceland and Corsica (probably same amount of money together though!). I'll miss another legendary meeting with James and cool Thor, and perhaps even Tom and Jon. I hope you come to Ghent, otherwise I'll have seen no international crowd this year.Kazoo -
