Based on past experience, it would be nice for a good film composer to be hired... even if their music doesn't end up being used, at least we'd get a great album.

Malick's on fire lately and it can only mean good things. Who is Jerod Tate btw?
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. Looking over his bio', he appears to be a classical and regular ochestral composer:

So, maybe good things from this score.

So instead of using classical source music this time he will hire a composer who writes classical-like, only to toss it at the last minute for original classical compositions? wink
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  2. Sounds about right. Maybe Mr. Tate isn't aware of Malick's perchant for going Kubrick.

  3. I think Tate's hiring might have had something to do with the funding conditions (in that someone from the state the film was shot in had to be hired in post-production). Tate, among others things, seems to have a native american streak in some of his pieces, so maybe he and malick have crossed paths before (over NEW WORLD).
Also, Hanan Townsend, who did the piano interpolations of classical music in TREE OF LIFE (and actually had more music in the film than Desplat, technically), is working on it.

    Interesting.

  4. Actually, Townshend clearly thinks he's done music for it:

There's a short iTunes album of music he did for TREE OF LIFE, 8 pieces in all. I think they were all referenced in the film, which is a bit more of a hit rate than Desplat got. Several were piano interpretations of classical works used elsewhere in the film, which is probably a hint of what's going to be going on here.

This is also Malick's shortest film since DAYS OF HEAVEN, I think. Under 2 hours. Apparently very experimental. Very little dialogue.

    Well, fuck me! tongue

I didn't even look up -- the thread showed no new posts since my last visit and I didn't see that one.

Tate's score was supposed to have been -- unless called off -- recorded early Summer.

Michael from what I see this movie has a pretty strong cast...

Just so your anticipation doesn't get too high, a few names did get cut from that cast... a la THIN RED LINE:
    http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2012/08/ … g_it_1.php
So the small parts cut include Rachel Weisz, Jessica Chastain, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen and Amanda Peet. They were probably tiny parts in the first place, but that's an impressive cutting room floor!

Hmm. The missing of Weisz is a downer.

Anyhow, still massively excited for this one! Did I already mention I'm going to see the film this sunday? lick
Wonder how many of the attending stars this weekend will discover during the showing they're missing...

  11. Boy, I hope Hanan doesn't watch the premiere and discover, like North and "2001", that his music isn't there, replaced by classical music.

  12. I think she only worked on the film for a few days (playing one of the main character's sisters). It's not quite like what happened to Adrien Brody in the THE THIN RED LINE.

What happened with Adrien Brody in The Thin Red Line?
  13. He had a lot of dialogue in the film, when it was filmed. In the end he utters only three or four lines in the final cut.

His text was certainly well-replaced by a monologue of Caviezel. biggrin

  14. I suspect from the bits we do see of Brody that his performance wasn't quite enough to rest so lofty a film on anyway. You need dreamy Jim to make that film work. (Much the same way New World rests on Q'rianca Kilcher.)

  15. Full soundtrack list ...

There isn't really a score at all this time, I gather. Some familiar names. Arvo Part, Gorecki, Respighi, Wagner and many more. Francisco Lupica and Arsene Jovanovich keep popping up in Malick soundtracks too.
A butterfly thinks therefore I am
  16. Lupica is a friend of Malick's.

From the list, that "song by Olga Kurylenko" is saying too much. It's basicaly a lullaby she hums to her daughter for a few seconds. Or maybe she wrote and sung a full song which was cut at the last minute.

Arvo Pärt's Fratres is used as a recurring theme (3 times, I believe).
