  1. If there were awards for best review of the year then James' Battleship review would surely be a contender!

I have to admit, I did find 30 minutes of Jablonsky's score for Battleship worth listening to. The rest is just ear-splitting noise. So I may come down on the side of Jordi's assessment of the score rather than James'.

  2. OPERATION DUMBO DROP - DAVID NEWMAN & VARIOUS ARTISTS

Years since I listened to the album which is 1/3 songs and 2/3 score, but only amounts to 37 minutes total. Too short for such fun and memorable music. I'm wondering when we'll see the re-release / remaster / expansion all in one. I'm sure it deserves to be released one day.

The album is horribly put together, the songs clash with the Newman cues all too often. It should've been score and then songs, or the other way around.

    NP: BRAVE STORY (Ben Watkins)

Varied adventure score with certain Gaelic influences by the Juno Reactor head guy. Fully orchestral, I think people here would enjoy it.

    Marco Polo (Ennio Morricone)

Great score. Rather mnimalistic and unique for Morricone.

  3. The Green Mile - Thomas Newman

This score doesn't get nearly as much attention as it deserves. I actually like this -- the score and the movie -- more than Shawshank.

    Predator II - Alan Silvestri

Sounds much better having fixed the phasing issue on the original CD.

NP: Crisis on Two Earths - James Venable & Christopher Drake

Really good music. The action cues have a very brassy, vibrant sound, in spite of the synthesized nature.

Christopher Drake is an incredible composer! I hope he gets to score some bigger projects in the future. But it won't be all that bad if he continues creating excellent work for more animated DC films either!

Not me but I understand where you're coming from, both score and film are excellent and when I say excellent that's a bit of an understatement.

Yep, I find myself in agreement with Kevin here.
My favourite non-horror (so to speak) King adaptation and my favourite Thomas Newman score.
    It all just completely clicks.

I still like The Shawshank Redemption beter as a book, but The Green Mile takes my preference for the wonderful marriage of visuals and sound.

I never read the Green Mile and I haven't read (Rita Hayworth and) Shawshank Redemption since the book came out ( which is four self contained novellas in DIFFERENT SEASONS for those who wouldn't know ), was there many changes to the film besides making 'Red' a black man?

  4. SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS - HARRY GREGSON-WILLIAMS

This is a traditional adventure score with a good amount of likeable cues. If there is one HGW score to own, I think this is it.

A few people raved about this one which I don't understand, I'd agree with you that it has some likeable cues but nothing stands out.

ah yes, you said it. I don't think you'll like it as much as Sinbad, but Arthur Christmas has some equally enchanting material

I think, compared to masterpieces, Sinbad is also a masterpiece. One of my all-time favourite scores. Up there alongside How to train your dragon in enjoyability.

    James Horner - Braveheart

Listening to this masterpiece was like revisiting an old friend who I haven't seen for too long a time. Brilliant score.

Fantastic score to a very fun but seriously flawed film.

  8. Breakdown Poledouris

I quite like both versions of this, very good release (though I could have done without the third disc).
  9. Elliot Goldenthal (and VA) - Heat

Great urban soundtrack, to me it's as defining for Los Angeles as is Vangelis' Blade Runner.

And TAXI DRIVER for New York.

I agree totally, although it's not so much LA in particular, but more of an urban soundscape in general.
  10. Krull Horner

No need to preach to the choir on this one!

Not to the choir, perhaps, but to the single choirboy whose note is a little off from the rest. wink

Except Taxi Driver (and potentially, when it comes to NYC, also On the Waterfront; interestingly that score was heavily referred to in at least a few noir scores for movies taking place in LA), would you have more of those urban soundscape albums you could recommend to me? Preferrably (somehow) LA.

  12. Hans Zimmer - K2

A very good and overlooked score. I know this one does have a few spins on this board (namely Timmer likes it). Some really good thematic material and a more epic sound from Hans in the time when he wasn't renowned for having an epic sound. The combination of synthesizers, ethnic instruments (how many synthesized though?) and a full orchestra makes for a well-rounded listen with some of a darker presentation of awe-inspiring nature (the film was dubbed a thriller after all).

This score is in my collection and it has a nice story to it. Kevin Smith of this very board decided to buy me a score for my birthday 2 years ago and lo and behold one day K2 is what I got. Thanks, Kevin.

Flawed in what way? All I see are passionate performances and three-dimensional characters, wonderful medieval setting and cinematography, thrilling battle sequences, and a finale to make even the Hulk cry. I think this movie is pretty much perfect, it may not be historically accurate but who cares with such brilliant film making. To make it even better is Horner's work, which I think is the best he has ever done. His score is the pulsating heart of the film.

Finally, I've never thought of Braveheart as fun !!! confused
