  1. "The Journey of Natty Gann"
    By: Jamie Horner*

One and-a-half times. It's just that good. I have a scene to a script of a sequel film, set to oen of the cues.

Michael Giacchino - Medal of Honor: Frontline

My favourite of the series. Takes the adventurous sound of the first game scores, just to put it through a more dramatic environment. The new Market Garden theme is plain beautiful, possibly the composer's best theme. And the choral parts are very good. Thanks to Erik I know where the choir sings the names of Giacchino's children and that's a great and sweet touch. GRACE sang in a big action piece is pretty damn effective, I'd say!

That huge brassy finish on 'The Rowhouses' is probably my favourite piece he wrote of all the MOH's. But yeah the whole album is just one highlight after another. I'm so glad he was around at that time to give these games such a memorable sound and even though the games are seriously outdated now, his scores will never be. smile

  3. THE ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM - JEREMY SOULE

My custom playlist makes for a more consistent, bore-free listen. I love the softer, melodic cues and battle pieces on an equal basis. It's the kind of music that transports me effortlessly to faraway magical realms. Like those in the game, which I'm still playing.

  4. NP: Nostromo (Ennio Morricone)

Have listened to this a fair bit today. A score that moves me immensely.

It is a very moving score indeed!
Been quite a while since I last heard it. I might just slip it on now.
  5. Michael Kamen - Band of Brothers

Great score, even if I actually prefer the chamber pieces mid-album to the big suites. Tracks like Bull's Theme, Boy Eats Chocolate (hell, this actually made me cry once when I was watching the series) or the masterpiece that is Discovery of the Camp) makes it a very worthy score.

Kamen is sorely missed. This is the only score of his I own, though.

Agreed, he's very much missed. You have a lot to discover. Many gems from Kamen.

How To Train Your Dragon John Powell

One of my favourite scores. Never fails to cheer me up/lift my mood!

  7. Harry Gregson-Williams - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Game score and a very good one. To me one of the best works from the man. The only complaint is that the music isn't dramatically as convincing as it could be, because it's all sampled, probably the vocals (Jackie Presti and Lisbeth Scott), guitar and solo trumpet are live, but yeah, it's all sampled and the dramatic music (great BB Corps) isn't as good as it could be, especially that HGW's dramatic string sound is very specific. Desperate Chase is possibly his best action piece.

Desperate Chase is good but Mobs Alive is just the coolest track he has done in a long time!

I also like 'At Dawn' (not by Harry) which accompanies that moment in the game where we see Snake and the bunch looking awesome on the ship while they're getting ready for the final mission. punk

It's a good game score and a far cry from his usual uninspired Hollywood scores.

  10. HEAT - GOLDENTHAL & OTHERS

Seeing how this film is in my top 10, and the use of music is both ingenious and stylish, this soundtrack does have merit, even if it's not always the easiest or most pleasing listen, and I have to be in the mood for it. But right now I definitely am in the mood. cool

NP : LA GUERRE DU FEU - Philippe Sarde

Better known as QUEST FOR FIRE, one of my top 50 scores of all time though like HEAT mentioned above by Gilles, I have to be in the right mood for it as it's quite a heavy listen but when I am in the mood like now this score is cerebrally rewarding, a sublime work.

    Here's a track from it

    CREATION OF FIRE

Does this conjure up fire sparking from tinder into full heated life or what?

p.s. it sounds far better played LOUD on my stereo punk

  11. THE HOMECOMING - JERRY GOLDSMITH

This is somewhat lovely in a very minimalistic way, at 20 minutes it's just short enough to not become dull, so I can live with this side of Jerry, though I prefer the other side of Jerry, the one with a bit more punch to it. smile

RASCALS AND ROBBERS: THE SECRET ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER AND HUCK FINN - JAMES HORNER

It's what follows The Homecoming that made me buy this disc. Some early hints of the adventurous Horner we would later hear to great effect in Willow coupled with a way too fun theme make this one blind buy I'm happy to have done.

    NP: ALWAYS (John Williams/various)

I'm still not sold on this soundtrack, but it's grown a bit on me over the years. Maybe because of my change in preferences and everything. The country songs are hit/miss, however.

  12. Jerry Goldsmith - Chinatown

Checking it out just to find out whether I want to own the album or not and... I think I actually do! Great and coherent combination of his jazzy and his more avant-garde sensibilities. Loved when some of his Tora! Tora! Tora! sensibilities came out in this short score.

It's BRILLIANT! I've always loved this score from begining to end including the period classics contained.

    The Avengers - Silvestri, Alan

As usual, I seem to be at odds with the consensus on a Silvestri score. I love this (the long Intrada album). Never gets boring to me. Impressed by the way he develops the Black Widow theme over the course of the score. And love, love the main theme.
