I just finished my second feature-length score, for the film The Legend of Cooley Moon http://www.cooleymoon.com It's a post-apocalyptic action/horror film. Sort of Mad Max with monsters. I'm pretty proud of the work I've done...it's definitely my best work so far. However, I feel I have tons of room for improvement if I ever want to be doing this for a living! So any feedback and critiques you can give me, I'd appreciate. I've uploaded the entire score, in .mp3 form to:
    https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B8-Zp … Y0d3M/edit
I've also included a text file with a description of the scenes I was scoring, to give a little bit of context (obviously spoilers for the film!) It's a little difficult really judging without seeing the picture, so I hope this might help.

Anyway, if anyone has the time or inclination to give me some feedback; let me know what I'm doing right, what I'm doing wrong and what I need to work on. I would appreciate it very much! If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, but would like to hear some of my work (including a couple cues from this score) visit http://www.reverbnation.com/joshloughrey

Thanks in advance for listening and for anyone who can help me improve a little!

I appreciate the listen! Looking forward to any help/feedback you can give me!
  1. I have had a quick listen to some of the tracks and I really like the acoustic guitar tracks. The score seems to sound best when it has 'live' instruments. I am assuming it is a mixture of live instruments and synths?

When synth strings are used the limitations of the synths can be heard. Which is a shame.

But otherwise, I am looking forward to hearing the score in full.

Thanks for listening! You are correct in that most of the score is synths (and far from the top of the line, as far as sample libraries go, but it's what I can afford right now!), and I do try to layer on live instruments when I can, for exactly the reason you pointed out! There's also a bit of electric bass, hammered dulcimer and harp in places.

Thanks again for listening, and I'm glad that you are enjoying it! Let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions for things to work on for my next project!

I had a listen and I have to say that it is a step above many things I've heard. A lot of thought went into the arranging and orchestration

Thanks for listening Tom, and for the kind words! I've been working hard to learn scoring/orchestration for the past couple years...still have a lifetime to go! Any particular weaknesses that you heard I should focus on?
