"La jeune fille et les loups" has been quite a disappointment.
But I've come across "Moving Music" by Armand Amar. Has anyone given it a spin yet? smile

Yeah but that goes well with me, i have no problem with it although I didn't particularly appreciate the "look at me, i can be Yann Tiersen too"-isms of "Moving Music".

    Oups, my mistake.
So, any chance this one sounds a bit different from his previous works then, or is he still sort of re-using his own work to such an extent it becomes annoying?

Bab'Azîz is possibly my favorite Amar score to date; the middle-eastern male chants in the beginning are a real treat for me but i can see how this might not be for everyone.

Nice review Joep, although a little more discussion of the music would have been welcome. But considering that there are no Amar reviews anywhere else, this is quite good.

I'm not sure what you mean. But I suspect you'd prefer more track by track descriptions? That's something I rarely do.

  1. It looks like this new cd is meant to be a complement to MOVING MUSIC, covering most of his other scores.

He's done quite a few films since he appeared on the scene in 2002. Glad to see his style seems to have hit it off with producers.

Piovani's music is original score, the rest isn't. As you can see some of Kilar's music comes from Il Sole Nero and one cue from Amar's Va, Vis & Deviens

I saw the movie « Home » last week. An absolute must for anyone who loves cinematography. Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s photos of our planet taken from the air are absolutely breathtaking. We don’t learn much more than we already know about the miserable state of our environment but the dichotomomy between the (too) beautiful images shown and what we are actually doing to our environment is a bit jarring.
For me, the music by Armand Amar is quite evocative, sombre and the most accessible one he has composed so far. There is a wide range of minimalism music for orchestra and choir. Also some action parts with energetic percussive moments turning into something you would think is composed by Philip Glass. There is an acoustic guitar piece and even a drum machine adding a more modern touch to the third part of the piece Home. This really suprised me coming from this composer. The last cue is a stunning piece featuring a female soprano voice.

The producers have made sure that their film is well distributed, see and accessible to everyone. So they have a theater release, a dvd release at a low price. The film is free and available now on youtube until June 14th in HD. The music by Armand Amar is at a low price of 3. 99 on itunes. All I can say is thank you!

I've just finished watching the HD version on Youtube and it's simply stunning. The cinematography is exquisite and Armand Amar totally nailed it with his score. Your description of the music is bang on!

Holy cow! I can dream that Armand will be there next Feb getting a little golden statue!

Is there going to be a cd release of the score?

  3. I saw Home being advertised on Amazon a few weeks ago but I've held off buying this as there was an entry for a "normal priced" (£7.99) deluxe edition release (in a few weeks) featuring much more music.

Though I have to say that that version has now disappeared from the Amazon listings. I think that it was due for release the last week in June.

I think Amar has a more diverse style than just saying "Glass-esque". He certainly is sometimes going the same route, but there's mostly more colour to his recent scores than there's to Glass' recent scores. Both have quite a different style when it comes world music influenced scores too (I'm thinking about the earlier Glass).

I think you expressed it quite well Bregt. Amar is more diverse. There is only one cue on this new score Home, the second half of "Black Gold" that is very much in Glass' territory. Apart from that, there are a lot of different moods, tones and colors in Amar's music which isn't the case for Philip Glass who is more "linear" in his compositions, to me anyway.

Hi Demetris. I'm doing well. How about yourself? You should give a listen to the music oh Home in the film. It is quite impressive. Beautiful aerial views of the earth. You'll feel like flying! wink wave

I'm not sure 'middle-eastern influenced scores' is very fertile ground for unique material.

In the way Amar did them, they were. He was closer to his Israeli musical roots, the sound of the middle east and Balcans and it was very unique. Now he usually sounds just like another Glass influenced composer, to me he's lost some of his unique musical voice.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  6. To me Glass was always there, since the first score I heard from him, LA TERRE VUE DU CIEL. But it doesn't dominate the scores... Neither HOME nor FIRST CRY nor MARCO POLO nor LE FILLE JEUNE ET LES LOUP among his recent scores are particularly Philip Glass-like.
Even his most Glass-free album, MOVING MUSIC, has quite a few minimalist devices in it, just not being used the way Glass would.

I quite like Comme Les 5 Doigts De La Main. It's a thriller score with a hugely ethnic 'Algerian' sound. There are some traditional Arabian instruments (including the duduk) and some moody thriller music. I'm affraid the actual thriller music is slightly dissapointing, because of the fact he utilizes electronic beats and the fact the string motifs sounds too much like things that other well known composers have done recently. Still the Algerian sounds and gripping melodies make it a very good listen. There are some reprises of previously written cues from several scores. Jalousie is a short reprise of the cue La Genese taken from La Terre Vue du Ciel and the entire cue is also part of the score release of Commes Les 5 Doigts de la Main. And there was this male chant that was also lend from another score , but cleverly incorporated at the end of a original composition.
