    Excellent!

"There's no denying that Sagan is one of the many enthrallingly (sad,) melodic works that Amar has written"

Sold, can't wait to hear this!

    Ao, le dernier Néandertal

Passionate ethnic work in the levels of quality and musicianship only he and Bruno Coulais can currently perform in the film music genre. Mesmerizing string lines lead (some parts reminded me of Zimmer's THE THIN RED LINE) along with colorful and vivid vocal work and winds that couldn't be more far away from the dreadful cliches of the genre delivered by the Hollywood bunch. Particularly recommended to fans of world music and especially Armand Amar's more Israeli-colored works; this is one of his best.

Listen to samples from the score here:
    http://www.theost.com/2010/ao_le_dernie … ertal.html

    Movie info here:
When his clan, including his wife and baby girl Néa, are massacred, Ao, a desperate Neandertal man, decides to leave the North country where he has been living for the South where he was born. His aim is to join his twin brother, from whom he was separated when he was nine. On his long and adventurous way home, he meets Aki, a Homo Sapiens woman... Written by Guy Bellinger (imdb)

Indeed, it's beyond words beautiful. What do you think of his other 2010 works?

Comme les 5 doigts de la main is solemn and calm too, although it contains a lot of older material from his works (Va, vis et deviens i believe?).

I haven't heard THE CONCERT yet, or Hors La Loi and Sagan. Could you comment on these? (I think Joep has done in the past too, for at least 1-2 from this list?)

Gosh! I've lost track of his scores since 2009 (with the exception of Home). After a while everything sounds like his earlier works. Is he still cutting from the same cloth?
BTW I don't understand the excessive praise for Sagan. A couple of tracks (main theme) are nice but nothing else is new.

I haven't heard Hors La Loi and The Concert. I heard Sagan and I agree with Joep, it really is a great score, very emotional stuff. If you like emotional music like I do than this is a must in your collection.

I know what you mean. Amar doesn't reprise older material on Ao, le Dernier Néandertal. Without any doubt his best score since Home.

I don't mind that he does it, but I can understand others can grow tired of it.

Not entirely correct. There's an entire track lifted from LE PREMIER CRI, with the flute part dropped. I think it was track 7 on LE PREMIER CRI.

  3. Also, for me, parts of the track 'Neanderthal' feel like they were a reaction to a temp track involving THIN RED LINE's 'Beam' (or perhaps the original Francisco album?).

  4. Anyone not heard Armand Amar's recent release, Planet Ocean, really needs to take a listen to it. It's quality documentary scoring.

  6. Thanks Alan -- I'll be getting it. I have a lot of time for Amar's scoring.

I've been listening to his TU SERAS MON FILS recently. Beautiful, melancholic stuff! And not an ostinato or action cue in sight! My kind of score...

(he actually also scored a Norwegian movie last year -- A THOUSAND TIMES GOOD NIGHT).
    I am extremely serious.

I saw the premiere of "A Thousand Times Good Night" (aka "1001 nights", common mispronounciation I hear a lot!) and attended a Q&A with its director. The good thing about it is the splendid photography and sensitive attention to the technical crafts. Unfortunately, the screenplay is poor, and the fact that Juliet Binoche would only accept her part if she could re-write her scenes to make them seem more credible, is quite telling... The score was fortunately better than the screenplay, but overly sentimental and oddly spotted, IMO.
