Bite the Bullet - Alex North

Astonishing to think that a composer like North could have flourished for so long in film - his uncompromising, utterly unsentimental music is like no other (prolific) film composer's. And I love it.
  1. Back then the composers ran the music departments, so there was an element of respect from one artist to another on matters of style.

NP: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Desplat)

Great to be listening to this one again. I found the vanilla film rubbed off a bit on the music for a couple of years, but I'm enjoying Desplat's typical intricate loveliness as much as ever.

So sad the movie sucks. But you're right on the score.

Perhaps the most relaxing album in my collection. (To some that might mean 'boring', but I'd say they have hearing problems.)

People Like Us - A.R. Rahman

I seem to be the only person who has ever mentioned this, but I really do like it.

Its ok but I don't enjoy it anywhere near as much as the last few Rahman scores.

    NP: Russland - Kolja Erdmann
Its somewhere between a Poledouris score and a Zimmer score. And pretty awesome!
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

Yeah, I liked that one too. The Wild Russia series it was originally written to accompany is absolutely stunning, if you're in to that kind of thing - one of the best of its kind.

NP: Killzone 2 - Joris De Man

    Excellent.
  2. Basil Poledouris - Conan the Barbarian

Finally saw the movie yesterday and it was a very interesting experience. First time I tried, I didn't get to the Mountain of Power, because I found the movie excruciatingly boring. Second time I got it, because I realised it's not an adaptation of a myth... It's the creation of a myth, very precisely and conventionally (look at the physical language of the performances, of course Arnold can't act for shit, especiall with his face).

The score is a major factor in this. Poledouris tends to score against the movie. This helps with creating a mythical world. The only scenes underscored in the typical vein are the final battle, basically. This leads to a very operatic movie creating myths rather than telling a simple score.

The score of course is pure brilliance. Listening to the re-recording Martijn sent me and for which I am eternally grateful, since I was penniless at the moment.

Arnold is not a good actor, of course, but some roles have really been tailored to his stone-faced mannerisms. The TERMINATORs and CONANs are good examples of where it really works, IMO.

  3. Who was of the major action stars of that era anyway? Gibson, Rusell, Willis... Who else?
