I was always convinced Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale were Arnold's two best Bond scores, but lately I've changed my mind and I think The World Is Not Enough tops them both.

I hope more music is released from it one day.

Can't really beat the next few weeks in terms of timing!

Ready When You Are, JB - John Barry

I don't suppose many people other than Timmer are familiar with this compilation he recorded in the late 60s (or was it early 70s?) but I think it's a stunner - half an hour of musical bliss. "The More Things Change" (an unused theme from On Her Majesty's Secret Service) has always been one of my very favourite Barry themes, just exquisite.

It's a fabulous album, the best re-recording of his own themes Barry ever did. I have very nostalgic memories of 'The More Things Change' in particular, it takes me back to being a teenager still living with my parents and playing this album on winter nights with the lights out and with a full fire blazing in the hearth. Brilliant choice James cool

    In fact...

NP : READY WHEN YOU ARE J.B. - John Barry

I also adore 'Who Will Buy My Yesterdays', a very sexy and darkly erotic track that apart from on this album was never available until the expanded On Her Majesty's Secret Service, this version is still the definitive one though.

TWINE need an expanded version, desperately so.

And I really hope that Thomas Newman is creating a Arnold-rivaling score. He needs it and we need it as well.

There isn't a great deal of unreleased music from TWINE, maybe about 15-20 minutes tops, but there's the fantastic opening cue as Bond escapes the Swiss bank, the two cues on Arnold's website (Snow Business/Kazakhstan), a great version of Renard's theme as the submarine is revealed and a brilliant Barry-sounding cue as Bond and Christmas swim away after it explodes.
  1. Jerry Goldsmith - Rambo III

Watched the film and it was better than I remembered, wow. Sometimes even actually I found it better than Part Two. Brilliant score from Jezza.

Right, but those are the one that fulfill the vision of the movie. The official album focuses mostly only the action, which, while great, will benefit from the (more) orchestral cues. The official TND album worked well, despite missing some really great cues, because there were so much variety.
  2. Mark Mancina - Speed 2: Cruise Control

    So much fun.

Yeah, that's a great piece too. I also love the radical version of The Lion in Winter. It's just such a great album.

    Diverse in today's music listening:

Four In the Morning - John Barry
I've never seen the film, but I love the score. Beautiful theme.
    Four Feathers - James Horner
A lovely score. While I enjoy this movie remake, don't get me started on its complete disregard for history.
Batman Forever - Elliot Goldenthal (La La Land Release)
Pure fun and excitement. Not to mention, extremely enjoyable and addictive themes.

    A good day.

    Patrick Doyle - Brave

Wins in my book, for most annoying major score of the year. Argh! Those bagpipes from HELL!
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

The film didn't do much for me either (I saw it on the plane from LA to NY a couple of weeks ago, which isn't the ideal setting, but still....). Can't remember much of the score, honestly.
    I am extremely serious.

I can't remember the full story but I believe John Barry did the score for free because he liked the film ( starring a very young Judi Dench ) and they didn't have the budget to afford someone like Barry whose star had already risen by then.

As for the Horner score to a historically inaccurate film you can also throw BRAVEHEART in there big time wink

NP: The Expendables 2 - Brian Tyler

Oddly this is better on album than in the film, where it was completely drowned out by the endless wall of noise. There's actually some interesting and fresh (at least for Tyler) orchestra utilization in here (more brass than usual). And the recording quality is indeed pretty good.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

NP: Medal of Honor: Warfighter - Ramin Djawadi

First listen is much more positive than I expected. It sounds like an extension of the first Ramin scored game, with new themes here and there. Not bad, but not ground breaking either.
  4. NP: Silk (Sakamoto)

I wasn't keen on this one. Found it a bit heavy handed, and the Arvo Part lifts bothered a bit as well. But with time, I've fallen for it, and today I keep playing it. Over and over.

Antidote for today's crappy noise we get passed around as scores. Such elegance in this one and general in the body of this composer's work.

Sakamoto is a very unique artist. There's no way not to adore his musics smile Also lots of passion in his artistry too, very rare thing today anymore.

I've never been fond of that score but yeah, even in his "lesser" scores Barry's class shines through, such a missed talent.

NP: Prometheus - Marc Streitenfeld & Harry Gregson-Williams

I finally finish watching the movie tonight and I must say that, sadly, my opinion of this score has not changed. Harry's thematic contribution still remain much more significant for me. Though Marc's flute motif for the "alien" elements comes very close. The remainder of the score is still so anonymous, and I've yet to be enlightened as to its purpose within the movie. Even Jablonsky's score for the Transformer movies got beyond it's perfunctory electronic nature, and has lasting listenability. Marc's score is like all of his previous scores, sounds like it should work, but there's nothing below the surface.
