    What I mean is that Star of Bethlehem doesn't get as many props as it should! It's really a superb piece of music.

    I need to hunt down the complete release. The suite probably has the essential music but 60s Jerry (and 70s) is always worth hearing in full.

    Oh. Yes, the complete Intrada version is fantastic!
    There are still a few good cues omitted from the suite that are essential. And a few nice romantic cues too.

    So do I. From what I heard so far it's one of the finest things Nightwhish has ever done, and that says a lot. Besides: It's not a score, really. They have done the album with a fictual film in mind. They are just now producing the film after the album is finished.

    The most soull melting and moving piece featuring solo trumpet IMO is this work from Vaughan Williams, go to the 2nd movement that starts at 8.55.

  6. I finally saw Skyfall, which was awesome. Newman's score worked beautifully with the film, which tends to happen especially with Sam Mendes films. Here's hoping Mendes does another Bond...

    NP: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Howard Shore

    Met this score without my hopes set too high... But Shore does more than deliver! Some really nice treatments of his Lord of the Rings themes, and some memorable new ones, as well. A solid score that feels at home with its counterparts in the Middle Earth soundscape. And the bass trombone writing ROCKS! smile

    NP: Red Dawn - Ramin Djawadi

    The main theme (existing in two parts) is excellent. The penultimate track, A Marine and His Rifle, presents it almost in that classic power anthem mode, but with a Djawadi style, all strings and synth percussion.
  7. Shuffling iTunes threw up Marco Beltrami's score for The Omen followed by Jerry Goldsmith's version. Beltrami's version is not bad (even ignoring the sentimental value I have for this score), but there is no contest at all when it's compared with Goldsmith's classic score.

  8. NP: Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud - Miles Davis

    Things have gone a bit mellower now with this Blues/jazz (I can never differentiate between the two) score. The melancholic brass playing in "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees" mirrors the dreich and damp weather outside at the moment.

    I'm not familiar with Davis film work surprisingly ( I know pretty much all of his famous albums ), Davis did an album with Michel Legrand which I've not heard either, just wondering if anyone here has heard it?

    Remakes are always vastly unfair projects for the composer, especially when the original's score is so acclaimed. I don't think Beltrami really had a chance here. Still, his score has many fine moments. It's not really a genre that I listen to regularly, anyway.

    Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - Michael Giacchino

    It works amazingly well in the movie (which I enjoyed) but I have trouble getting into this score on disc. Being a Giacchino fan though, I keep trying...

    I used to love most of Beltrami's horror scoring but lately it all tends to sound the Same. At some instances there will be something different, like a unique small motif or an intriguing theme, like the woman in black, which will keep me interested. But when it's all dark brooding underscore without a masculine cue or a theme or two it all quickly goes down the drain. The other day I was trying to listen after a long absence, stuff like Red Eye or Cursed. I quickly took those CDs out and promised to myself I would never re attempt it !
