What marcel said. Dario handles cliched material like this in completely unique and personal ways. No relation to the nameless identity-less copies of gladiator we get each year. This come from a man who knows music.

I agree. This is far more than just another GLADIATOR clone.
    I am extremely serious.

IndieWire claims to have seen Joe Wright's ANNA KARENINA at the Venice Film Festival (which is weird, because I left yesterday and there was no sign of the film - nor is it anywhere in the programme, but hey, maybe it was a screening limited to press and industry, even though those films are also in the catalogue I've got), but their take is a very positive one with little mention of the music. But, for what it's worth, it's a positive comment:

(...) Dario Marianelli's handsome score, weaving niftily between being diagetic and non-diagetic (...)

Either way, I'm very much looking forward to this work, film and score.

  1. I do like the way the Joe Wright films play with music crossing the diegetic barrier.

Wright's films often make excellent use of music.

Empire Magazine is also very positive, though no word on the music:

Bold, imaginative, thought-provoking and passionate, Anna Karenina puts Wright at the forefront of filmmaking in Britain. Or anywhere.

  2. As snobbish as it sounds, I don't think I'd put a lot of stock in an Empire magazine review. (The film may be good, but there's others speaking well of it right now that I trust more.)

Well, why not? Especially if it's Wright we are talking about...he's proven, for long now i think, that he's an exceptional film-maker.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  3. Read it again. wink I'm not saying the film isn't good.

I know but i do not think that Empire's reviews are bad either smile Well, most of the cases. Ok they are a bit over-the-top in love with everything British, but i can't find a better widely released movie magazine so far..am i missing one?

I'm generally in agreement on their reviews as well - you just have to know how to read them. Indeed, you have the Brit-love (although, if a British film is bad, they don't shy away from mentioning that as well), but in return, you get a refreshing neutral look at American films, which you rarely get with American magazines and reviewers.

I don't tend to buy movie magazines, so I don't know if there is. I guess everyone has their own reference points when it comes to saying -- 'if this person reviews it well, THEN I'm interested...'

  5. For Anna Karenina, this review felt like a good indication of what I'm likely to see:

Via Tim Burden, you can currently listen to a concert of Mariannelli's music (click "listen live") performed by the RTE orchestra back in Februari

The action/drama parts I was a bit reminded of The Brothers Grimm, an excellent score I haven't listened to in half a decade. Of course it's not quite so "grim" as that one, but it's one of the few times Marianelli has written that sort of music.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

I am assuming from what you're saying Jon, you've seen the movie and so can say that the music doesn't function as mickey mouse music. But I can't but help but think that it sounds like mickey mouse music.

There are some moments of silliness but no mickey mousing that I noticed. Not in the film, certainly.

Mickey mousing would imply there is a lot of shapeless music that hits particular beats on screen and Marianelli never does that. His pieces are well developed and coherent. His snatcher theme is indeed probably the weakest of themes but that's the only thing I can agree on. There is always something happening thematically in this music. The amount of variations he manages to draw from his short main theme idea is just staggering.

I don't find so much coherent mickey-mousing in Boxtrolls. I think it's less coherent than his previous, usual-styled works.
