I really wish him all the best for tonight, he truly has the worthiest work in the best original score category.

I haven't heard the score yet? I'll be taking notice while watching the film.

The best you can do with this particular movie IMO (pay attention to the GREAT Dunkirk sequence): better listening the score in the movie first. I did it and the experience was amazing. Of course after that you´ll buy it wink

    We shall see? wink

I'm pleased to say you were totally right Marselus, LOVED the score, really loved it! I'll be buying it as soon as possible!

    I told ya! wink
Glad you liked it. I hope you liked the movie too, as the music is excellent with the images.

I thought the movie was superb and the score fitted perfectly, fine acting and a few twists and turns that I found totally unexpected, a poignant film indeed.

  1. Congratulations to Dario on taking the award. wave

By coincidence I received my copy of Atonement this morning in the post and I'll be giving it a listen later. I'd like to say that I bought this because I wanted to bathe in Dario's wonderful music but the truth is a little more embarassing than that. shame

I suddenly realised the other day that I had ordered Brian Tyler's Rambo score twice at SAE so I had to e-mail them quickly with a replacement - hopefully cathing this package before it shipped. And Atonement was the CD I came across that cost the same as Rambo and would be an easy swap.

Amy Adams' intro for Best Original Score is completely cliched and uninspiring. As well as Dario's speech, but who in that room really cares, besides the compoers, about the music.

    Congrats to Dario ofcourse.

Hehe, it's the picture of lovely Keira on the copy that made you want to listen to it, isn't it? wink
  2. I've had a first listen to Atonement and I'm struggling to see what the fuss is all about. I won't be hearing the music as featured in the movie as the movie doesn't interest me and so the stand-alone listening experience I'm having is probably not doing Dario's work true justice.

I've had a read of your piece, Demetris and it's a nice tribute to Dario's achievement. Though I have to say that an alternate view to the comment "...Dario cleverly incorporated the sounds of a typewriter into his music...attribute his score with a distinct breath of fresh air..." is that, for me, it just intrudes into the music. To borrow a phrase from the note from Joe Wright/Paul Webster in the booklet, it's "percussive clatter". It may say more on the current state of film music when the inclusion of a typewriter is seen as being a "breath of fresh air"?

I also found the vocals in the "Elegy For Dunkirk" to be too intrusive and distracting - I think that I understand what was being attempted by the inclusion but (again, for me) it was just a clumsy way of trying to achieve what - I'm sure - the orchestral score could achieve by itself.

There is some beautiful music on this CD, but I think that I'll need to dodge the elements listed above to make it an enjoyable listening experience.

Mmm... maybe you're a bit haunted by the Enormous Weight of Anticipation on this one? Let it sink in, I'm sure you'll get into it later on smile Too bad you haven't got the ambition of watching the movie, though... After seeing it, I'm sure you'd understand there wasn't any other way then include the Dunkirk choir and even the typewriter smile
  3. I must say Demetris has well and truly adjusted his grudging approval of this score. wink

    I saw too many asses....

But, ey...Im not saying is a bad score. I like it.

But again it seems, the academics has awarded a composer and an score just for not leave a movie without any oscar.

I think Beltrami or Giacchino deserved the oscar much more.

    Just my opinion.

(and yes, I enjoyed Atonement score the 2 times I heard it)

    I have, indeed!

Alan mate, believe me, my reactions were exactly the same when i first listened to the score, BEFORE i watched the movie. Watching the (otherwise marvelous) movie will entirely change your views on the score; believe me as i talk out of first-hand experience! Michael (and many others) was saying to me what i'm telling you now and i had huge difficulties getting convinced; all until i experienced its function within the movie, that is smile

  4. Looks like there's going to be a few classical standards in this one. I wonder if Marianelli has written a fictional cello concerto for the Jamie Foxx character to play at one point.

  8. Ah... yet another hommage to PERSONA from a film that probably won't be worthy to wipe its shoes.

(ATONEMENT features an hommage of its own, now that I think about it, with the scene where the characters walk in front of the cinema screen, though there it at least had something to do with the film...)
