Could you or Thor give me an example of what's not to like in Vertigo? I'm not 100% sure I understand you?

For me, it's mostly just a lot of the simmering, low-key stuff that occupies the bulk of the score. It's brilliant film music but I often find myself checking my watch and waiting for "Scene d'Amour" to pop up. With the Hitch/Hermann scores, three or four highlight cues are usually enough to satisfy me.

Thanks guys, I understand now. I love that kind of scoring so it's not a problem to me.

good review James, but I must have listened to another score because I truly hated it. Not a hint of the usual Doyle magic and very standard (almost irritating) action music. I give it **

I agree with Thomas. Like his score for THOR I'd give it no more than 2 stars.

NP: ON THE BEACH (Christopher Gordon)

Great album that spans many different moods throughout -- always with top-class orchestral writing.
    I am extremely serious.

It's a great score IMO but don't you think it also deserves to be in the correct thread? wink

Pleasantly surprised you enjoyed this so much. I think it's clear to see that Doyle was more comfortable writing in a modern style on this score than he was on Thor, and there's quite a lot of depth to it both in the instrumentation and the various motifs scattered throughout the score. It doesn't have themes as obvious or satisfying as Thor though.

I liked Thor a lot more as well, especially the theme which I think is awesome

He'll be premiering selection(s) from "Jack Ryan" there, too.

My initial reaction to Jack Ryan was not so favourable. My considered reaction is rather more favourable:

I must admit I wasn't that taken by it on my first listen. I must have been in the wrong mood because the second listen was much more favourable.

It is definitely a score that demands you join with its' own moods as opposed to adapting to yours.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  8. I love the score. BUT: It is sweet, melodic, sweeping but not very demanding orchestral music. A bit on the easy listening side. For that kind of music I find over 80 minutes too long. I always split the CD in the middle. Also I can't find any "musical narration". It all feels a bit like a random offering of (great) material. This is an occasion when I side with Thor. I would have preferred a shorter and more "rounded" album.

Insightful thoughts, Synchrotones. I also found it to be one of the most mature and well constructed scores from Doyle, an especially pleasant surprise after his recent journeys into Remote Control territory since Eragon. I didn't know if we were ever going to get this side of Doyle again, but he's back and stronger than ever!

Doyle will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and will attend the WSA, where a selection of his music will be performed. Since he's British, I guess he'll also attend the Great British Film Music concert on Thursday.
