I have Rudy on Blu-Ray and it operates on my UK (Region B) player.

There are "guidelines" over which studios' films will work, but they don't work every time. The forum at www.blu-ray.com is an excellent place to find out about specific titles.

I already checked that one out, and it states regionfree

So I ordered it and hoping it will work

I guess you love that movie too because of the music eh wink

It's definitely region-free. The music's better than the movie, but I did like the film.

Unfortunately, some great-looking Fox releases of Goldsmith movies - with isolated scores! - are on region-locked Blu-Rays. Patton and Sand Pebbles. Great pity.

these aren't movies I would have bought now on Blu-Ray, but it is a pity when they're region locked, no matter which movie sad

  2. So what are your standout blu-rays? The ones you didn't expect to blow you away but did: a great remaster, cracking good audio or just gorgeous hidef details, it all counts.

For me its, in no particular order:
Blade Runner: Final Cut: simply stunning, it looks like the movie was made only a year ago. But no it's 27 years old shocked
Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 3 versions of the movie on 1 disc and house-moving audio capabilities: yes please...
Apocalypto: the jungle scenes come alive with vivid colors and the detail is astounding.
Die Hard 4.0: the single best audio track I've ever heard, turn down your sub / bass a little, or face the consequences.
Independence Day: great visual spectacle and thunderous sound. Aliens, come visit me anytime.
Wall-E: a total winner on the HD aspect, animation at its most pixel-perfect.
Ratatouille: same here, and an even better film, so a complete triumph in my book.
Memoirs of a Geisha: great looking and sounding film, thanks to the boost in clarity.

Transformers - Holy shit. The amount of Pixels make my eyes bleed.
The Dark Knight - More stuff needs to be shot in imax.
Casino Royale - Awesome audio. African Rundown has so much punch to it.

I'm renting Die Hard 4 atm but haven't had a chance to watch it on blu-ray. I'm looking forward to this supposedly uber audio track!

Edit: I was a little pissed off with Jumper the other day. It's got DTS HD audio and conveniently my amplifier (that's only a year old) doesn't support it. I had to down convert it to normal DTS a.k.a regular DVD audio. I hope Die Hard 4 isn't like that. slant

Oh Anthony, Die Hard 4 on Bluray is one of the best audio movies I've heard in a long time, my brother will tell you the same deal

If you want Blu-ray's to pay you back through perfect visual and audio, Die Hard 4 is one of the most brilliants ones of the entire selection

Die Hard 4 has a DTS HD Master audio track so your receiver will just decode it in something less if Jumper also had such a track. Damn man that blows. I feel your pain cry

I couldn't get sound at first on Jumper and then I realised I had to set up my player to down convert PCM audio. Luckily it looks like DH4 has DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1. I'm not quite sure what the difference is, but I'm thinking only the second will work.
  5. You use the PS3 for blu-rays right? So you need to set output to Linear PCM (HDMI), so your receiver will decode it properly into Multichannel PCM. Which means DTS HD if your receiver is up to the task.

Nope, I've got a separate blu-ray player with a optical cable going into my amp. Unfortunately the amp can't decode DTS-HD so I'm screwed when films only have that as a codec. I can do it so ALL the data goes down the HDMI cable and via the TV before coming back through to the amp but I don't know if this makes any difference. (I wouldn't have thought so - if the amp doesn't support DTS-HD then it doesn't supposrt DTS-HD!)

Apparently PCM via optical only allows for 2 ch audio. PCM down HDMI allows up to 5.1 channels...but I think whatever way I go my amp is still going to screw me over as again it can't freakin decode DTS-HD. cry

I just purchased Largo Winch on blu-ray (French) since I still can't find any information on when or if it will be releasd outside of mainland Europe. (Speaking of which, did the CD ever become available in the US? Varese said it would be iTunes only until the US film release)

Even though it's a French release, the disc has got English audio and is apparently region B, so I'm hoping it works! :fingers-crossed:
