Apparently Tim he is serious. Oh well he is entitled to his opinion. He is wrong but he is entitled.

He's right that Yared is listenable, for me Yared is amongst the most listenable composers in film music and one of the best.

As for Stravinsky I can only assume he hasn't heard much?

  1. Both the Yared and Stravinsky selections are great, but the album works better if you play them in isolation, not together.

It took me many years to become comfortable with Stravinsky with the exception being the Firebird Suite.

My opinion of the Yared material has definitely improved upon further listenings of Coco and Igor. I still ask if anyone has seen the film?

  2. I would like to see it. I've heard it's not that interesting, but just to see them both characterised in the same scene would be interesting.
I love his music for the film. There's a few motific references to Stravinsky works in there, if I'm not mistaken. Filtered through Yared's own sensibility, definitely.

There are certainly strong strong references to Stravinsky. The theme featured in "Coco and Igor" is a reference to the "Introduction" theme in Rite of Spring. Just listen to track #1 and #18. The more I listen the clearer it becomes to me.

    Yeap, indeed.

GABRIEL YARED replaced by JAMES NEWTON HOWARD on THE TOURIST

James Newton Howard has taken over scoring duties on the dramatic thriller The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. He is replacing composer Gabriel Yared who has already recorded music for the movie in London earlier this year.

As much as i love JNH, Yared's score would have undoubtedly been different from what we usually hear.

Noooooo! I was so hoping to hear a Yared along the lines of Bon Voyage. sad
I didn't like what I saw of Jolie in the trailer. Guess I'm too fond of the French version that I won't like this remake.

Exactly! I've gone very lukewarm on JNH of recent years ( ho hum Hollywood rolleyes ), I hope he gives this a score I'll like but I would take Yared anyday.

Well, let's see ... he's still beaten by:

    Jerry Goldsmith
    Elmer Bernstein
    John Barry
    Christopher Young
    Maurice Jarre
    Michael Kamen
    David Shire
    Mark Isham
    Michel Legrand
    Others

Tired with North, Badalamenti, Mandel, though.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  6. He's tired with them? Poor Yared!
